SNEAD STATE WOMENS COACH - Snead State Community College has parted ways with women's Head Basketball Coach Tonya Bogle. In two seasons as head coach, she complied a 15-37 record. Daryle Douthard has been named the program's interim coach to lead the team until a new head coach is hired. SSAC SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP - As part of a new three-year commitment, the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex will hold the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Softball Championship tournament May 4-6, 2023. Decatur Morgan County Tourism and the City of Decatur’s Parks and Recreation Department will host the event for nearly 200 student-athletes and coaches, along with their families, traveling from Mississippi, Georgia and within Alabama. The seven teams competing in the SSAC Softball Championship May 4-6 are Blue Mountain (Blue Mountain, Miss.); Brewton-Parker (Mt. Vernon, Ga.); Faulkner (Montgomery, Ala.); Middle Georgia (Cochran, Ga.); Mobile (Mobile, Ala.); Stillman College (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) and William Carey (Hattiesburg, Miss.). Championship game time is 12 p.m. CST on Saturday, May 6. Tickets are being sold online only at ssacsports. com/tickets. There will be people at the gate that can help with this process if needed. Daily admission is $12 for adults, $6 for SSAC students with ID, $6 for kids ages 11-17 and free for children 10 years and under. Any youth athlete 12 years old and under can also get in free if they are wearing their jersey. Any youth athlete 13 to 18 years old gets in free if they are with their team and coach. Tournament passes are $30 per person. Parking is free. The SSAC is one of the premier NAIA conferences, founded in 1999, with 11 member institutions across Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi. The Montgomery based conference sponsors 20+ intercollegiate sports, culminating in 20+ neutral-site conference championship events held annually throughout the Southeastern region of the United States. Wilson Morgan Softball Complex features six lighted fields, centrally located concessions, quad, press box and batting cages. Each field has a clay infield and beautiful grass, maintained by electronically controlled underground irrigation systems. Located at 300 Beltline Road, the facility can seat over 2,000 spectators with additional seating available. GEORGIA SPRING FOOTBALL - Arian Smith scored twice, Carson Beck had a big opening half throwing the ball, and the Red squad knocked off the Black, 31-26, in the University of Georgia's 2023 G-Day Game. Carson Beck, who is competing to take over the starting quarterback job, got off to a perfect start leading the Red team. His first pass went for seven yards, to running back Cash Jones out of the backfield. His second throw was a 17- yard completion to wideout Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, and his third was a 39-yard completion to All-American tight end Brock Bowers. Georgia unveiled Uga XI, named Boom, during a ceremonial collar transfer. Boom is a 10-month-old English Bulldog. Uga X, known as Que, is retiring after a great run that began in 2015. Que is the winningest Uga of all time, having roamed the sideline. The Bulldogs will be back at Sanford Stadium on Sept. 2, when they open the 2023 season against UT Martin.

1000 WINS - Jacksonville State University head softball coach Jana McGinnis earned her 1,000th career win on Wednesday, March, 22, 2023. With the Gamecock's 13-1 road victory over Alabama State, McGinnis became the 12th active Division I coach with 1,000 wins. She's one of only three head coaches to win their games all at the same school joining Oklahoma's Patty Gasso and USC-Upstate's Chris Hawkins. JSU President Dr. Don Killingsworth also recently announced that the Gamecocks home facility will be renamed in her honor. Known as University Field since it was home to the Gamecocks baseball program for many years before it moved to its current location and the softball program moved in in 1996, it will now be known as Jana McGinnis Field. This is her 30th season at the helm of the Gamecock's program. HOMECOMING - The University of Florida football team will host the Vanderbilt Commodores on Saturday, Oct. 7 for its annual Homecoming Game. The Gators own a 71-26-2 record in Homecoming games all-time, including a 29-5 mark since 1989. Florida downed Missouri last year 24-17 on Homecoming. The last time the Gators hosted Vanderbilt on Homecoming was in 2021. UCONN WINS MEN'S TITLE - The Connecticut Huskies defeated San Diego State 76-59 in the championship game of the 2023 NCAA Men's Basketball. Tristen Newon paced the Huskies with 19 points. Keshad Johnson led Sand Diego State with 14 points. LSU WINS WOMEN'S TITLE - The SEC came out on top in the 2023 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament as LSU defeated Iowa 102-85 in the championship game. Jasmine Carson paced LSU with 22 points. Caitlin Clark lead Iowa with 30 points. NBA DRAFT IS JUNE 22 - University of Kentucky men’s basketball freshman guard Cason Wallace has declared for the 2023 NBA Draft and will forgo his remaining collegiate eligibility. Wallace was an All- Southeastern Conference Freshman Team selection after ranking among the league leaders in assists per game (2nd), assist-to-turnover ratio (4th) and steals per game (4th). He found a variety of ways to impact the game, including finishing third in program history for a freshman with 63 steals. His eight steals against Michigan State in the Champions Classic tied for the most in a single game in UK history. Wallace averaged 11.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.0 steals per game in 32 appearances. He had 17 double-figure scoring games and led the team in steals in 19 contests. Wallace had 21 points, four assists, two steals and a career-high nine rebounds against Kansas State in the NCAA Tournament in his final game for the Wildcats. The NBA Draft Combine will take place May 15-21 and the 2023 NBA Draft is scheduled for June 22. PETTWAY HIRED AT KSU - Former University of Alabama standout Antoine Pettway has been named as the eighth head coach in Kennesaw State men’s basketball history. Pettway comes to the KSU after a stellar 15 years on the Alabama coaching staff, which culminated in the Crimson Tide spending several weeks as the nation’s No. 1 ranked team this past season. Known as one of the top recruiters in the nation, he brought in the third-ranked class in the nation in 2022 that included two five-star and two four-star recruits, highlighted by potential NBA Draft Top 3 pick and 2022-23 National Freshman of the Year Brandon Miller. Alabama ranked in the top 20 in the nation in scoring for the past four years under Pettway as the team’s offensive coordinator. Before joining the Alabama staff in the summer of 2008, he spent two years as an assistant coach at Jacksonville State, after one season as a graduate assistant coach at Alabama. Pettway served as assistant coach at Alabama from 2008-10, then spent three seasons as the team’s director of operations before moving back into an assistant coach role for the 2013-14 season. AUBURN ADDS TOP TRANSFER - Denver Jones has officially signed his National Letter of Intent to join the Auburn men’s basketball program for the upcoming 2023-24 season. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound shooting guard is a transfer from Florida International University, who averaged 20 points, 3.8 rebounds per game during his sophomore season. Originally from New Market, Alabama (near Huntsville), he started and played in all 27 games of the season for the Golden Panthers, scoring in double figures in 25 of those contests. He registered a career-high 30 points at Rice on March 4. Additionally, Jones ranked fifth nationally in mid-range field-goal percentage. During his freshman campaign at FIU, he was named Conference USA Freshman of the Week and led the league in free- throw percentage (89.6). Jones began his collegiate career at Garden City (Kan.) Community College. There, he garnered all-region second team, all-conference first team and Jayhawk Conference Freshman of the Year honors. He averaged 19.1 points per game and shot 40 percent from long range. The son of Ernest and Jennelle Jones, he finished his prep career at Memphis (Tenn.) Day Academy and was tabbed all-area, first-team all-region and second team all-state. His older brother, Dallas Jones, played college basketball at South Alabama and Texas Wesleyan. JSU SUMMER CAMP - The Jacksonville State women's basketball program has announced the dates for the program's 2023 team and individual camps. This summer's events will begin with a Team Camp from June 19-23. The camp will provide the opportunity for entire varsity, junior varsity, and travel teams to receive instruction from Jax State's veteran coaching staff before facing off with other teams in attendance. Different packages are offered based on the number of games played, ranging from three to six, as well as whether or not the campers will be staying in dorms and/or eating meals on campus. The 2023 Elite Camp will kick off a week later and will be held June 30-July 1 in Jacksonville. Campers can choose from four different options that include overnight stay or commuting for a two- day camp or single-day participation The Elite Camp will take place at Pete Mathews Coliseum. Youth Snapshots Alabama softball fifth-year senior Montana Fouts has been selected to the 2023 USA Softball Women’s National Team roster that will compete this summer at the WBSC World Cup in Ireland. This will be Fouts’ second year competing with Team USA, previously helping guide the team to a gold medal at last summer’s World Games in Birmingham, Ala. The 16 selected athletes will represent Team USA at the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) World Cup in its Group A event July 11-15 in Fingal-Dublin, Ireland.
