Coastal This week Coastal staff officially wrapped up the 2025 Shorebird/Sea Bird nesting season. Charlotte County saw some of the best nesting it’s had in years with a total of 3 American Oystercatcher chicks fledging, 71 Black Skimmer chicks fledging, 118 Least Tern chicks fledging, and 3 Wilson’s Plover chicks fledging across all nesting sites on all of our beaches. Staff has already removed all shorebird/seabird nesting sites in preparation for hurricane season, and to prevent entanglement hazards for our nesting sea turtles. Our new coastal environmental specialist, Zach, made his first seabird rescue! Deputy Primmel called coastal staff with an injured bird in hand, so Zach immediately ran to pick up the juvenile Sandwich Tern, and transport it to the Wildlife Center of Southwest Florida where it will be rehabbed and released. Coastal staff also continues to GPS sea turtle nests on all beaches, with a total of 1,476 sea turtle nests- 1,272 Loggerhead nests and 204 Green nests. Staff also worked to put up all of the art work from the summer sea turtle artwork competition in the Centennial Rec Center so residents can come vote on their favorite artwork to help with new educational outreach materials for sea turtles.
