WHAT’S NEW AT DAU

Updates to ACQuipedia and Tools DAU’s Glossary and ACQuipedia are go-to resources for acqui- sition professionals seeking definitions or a brief primer. These living documents are routinely updated to ensure they remain current. In March, DAU published the definition for Software Bills of Materials (SBOM) , as well as updated information on Agile Project Management and Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certifica- tion . Make sure to use ACQuipedia to stay up-to-date on cur- rent terms of art, definitions, and developments. (Read more) DoD and Zero Trust, What You Should Know Tim Denman Cybersecurity has traditionally focused on protecting the network perimeter and keeping adversaries out. Unfortu- nately, a fully secure perimeter has proven impossible in to- day’s modern computing environment, which often includes cloud computing and worldwide remote access. When un- wanted intruders get inside the network, they often have unhindered access for months. (Read more) The Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA)—formerly known as the Open Systems Architecture—is a technical and business strategy for designing affordable and adaptable systems. The Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, Systems Engineering and Archi- tecture recently published Implementing a Modular Open Systems Approach in Department of Defense Programs , providing “the DoD community, including military services, civilians, and DoD support contractors with information to help ensure pro- grams incorporate a MOSA as part of the defense acquisi- tion program life cycle.” (Read more) “Software is at the core of every weapon and supporting system we field to remain the strongest, most lethal fight- ing force in the world,” Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth wrote in a March 6 DoD memorandum “Directing Modern Soft- ware Acquisition to Maximize Lethality.” The memo instructs the workforce to shift to a software-centric acquisition model. The goal of this shift is for DoD to maintain technological superiority and enhance Warfighter capabilities in an era of software-defined warfare. Protecting Government Interests and Taxpayer Dollars DAU Communications

DoD uses a variety of tools, such as the False Claims Act, International Traffic in Arms Regu- lations (ITAR), Defective Pricing, and the Foreign Corrup- tion Protection Act (FCPA) to safeguard taxpayer funding. USPTO and DoD Collaborate on Intellectual Property DAU Communications

In January, DoD and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to ex- pand intergovernmental collaboration in the interest of na- tional security and protection of federally owned intellectual property and assets. “The USPTO’s knowledge and expertise serve as key resources for the DoD and will provide a great benefit to its laboratories and acquisition program offices through the DAU-sponsored training offerings,” said Ste- phen Luckowski, USPTO Technology Transfer, Transition and Commercial Partnerships Director. (Read more) The pace of change is relentless, driven by adversarial ad- vancements and the rapid evolution of generative AI tech- nologies. This means that our acquisition workforce must learn and innovate faster than ever before. The Defense Innovation Board (DIB) has released eight studies illumi- nating a path forward. By prioritizing the rapid adoption of emerging technologies, engaging with nontraditional de- fense vendors, and scaling the supply chain for unmanned systems, we position ourselves to maintain a lethal strategic advantage.
