time at seniors program

There is little down time at the seniors day program in Hawkesbury.
“We are lucky,” agrees Lucille Foley, a resident of Chute-à-Blondeau, who regularly
gets together with her “new group of friends.”
ProvidedbythePrescott-RussellCommunityServicesagency,theprogramisavailable
to people 65 years and over. Offering a wide range of activities, the program helps
promote senior citizens’ autonomy, self-esteem and to eliminate isolation.
On this day, the group is discussing, among other things, knitting, graymatter, games
and the benefits of the program.
The agency has organized a press conference in order to mark the 94 th
birthday of
Lucille Foley, the oldest member of the group, and to promote the day program. East
HawkesburyMayorRobertKirbyandHawkesburyMayorRenéBerthiaumeareonhand
to present congratulatory certificates.
Program coordinator Denise Kirouac presents a certificate received from General
Governor David Johnston.
Lucille Foley and her ten friends at the day program knit mittens for day care centres
and greeting cards for program volunteers.
“They teach us a lot and share their knowledge between themselves,” points out
Denise Kirouac.
Oneof the favourite activities is solvingSudokupuzzles. “Theprogramis good for the
brain,” notes Jeannine Lacelle. Berthiaume adds that there is scientific evidence that the
brain develops additional neurones when people develop new skills.
FloraCléroux,whoat 73 is oneof theyounger programparticipants, is learninga third
language – Italian. “Everyone benefits fromthe personal contact. The simple fact that the
program is available gives them a reason to get out of the house,” Kirouac points out.
