Meet the Dedicated Women Behind the Women of Color Network's Mission

T he Women of Color Network (WOCN) is driven by a dedicated team of three committed staff members and a cadre of nationally recog- nized women of color consultants. Their com- bined efforts play a pivotal role in addressing the unique challenges faced by women of color, fos- tering community empowerment, and advanc- ing anti-oppression initiatives. Leading the charge is Tonya Lovelace, MA, the WOCN Project Manager. Tonya brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her role, draw- ing upon two graduate degrees and a background as an adjunct instructor at several accredited universities. Her extensive experience in direct service, systems change, and project coordina- tion is complemented by her expertise in nation- al, state, and local anti-oppression and cultural competency training. Tonya is instrumental in the overall development and growth of WOCN projects, overseeing national training, technical assistance, and support provided to WOCN con- stituents, Advisors, Mentor Project, and consul- tants across the country.

Rebecca Balog, BA, serves as the WOCN Proj- ect Specialist. In this role, Rebecca coordinates the development and implementation of various WOCN projects and resources. Her responsibil- ities encompass public policy, writing WOCN publications, and providing comprehensive support to outreach and membership activities. Rebecca's work is integral to planning and exe- cuting initiatives focused on anti-oppression in communities of color, addressing issues within Tribal and Sovereign Nations, and tackling vio- lence issues. She also plays a crucial role in na- tional organizing efforts around young women of color and leadership.

Shasme Jackson, AA, is the WOCN Project Assistant. Shasme's role in- volves facilitating the logistics of WOCN projects, including the dissem- ination of WOCN materials and co- ordination of national teleconferences and webinars. As the Project Assistant, she assists with organizing WOCN meetings and events, triages and routes national technical assistance calls, and provides strategic administrative sup- port services to WOCN Program proj- ects. Her contributions ensure the ef- ficient operation of WOCN initiatives and effective communication with a diverse base of inquiries.

The collaborative efforts of Tonya, Rebecca, and Shasme, alongside nationally recognized consul- tants, have significantly impacted communities of color. Their unwavering dedication to the devel- opment and growth of WOCN projects, anti-oppression initiatives, and support for women of color underscores the organization's mission to empower and uplift marginalized communities.

While initially focusing on addressing domestic violence and sexual assault, WOCN has expanded its purview to encompass a wider spectrum of socie- tal issues that disproportionately impact communities of color. Recognizing the interconnected nature of various forms of violence, including human traf- ficking and police brutality, WOCN has broadened its scope to confront these pressing challenges head-on. By adopting a more comprehensive approach, WOCN seeks to dismantle systemic barriers and address the root causes of vio- lence that plague women of color. T he Mentor Project stands as a cornerstone initiative guided by the core principle of "each one, teach one." This philosophy underscores the essence of mentorship within WOCN, where seasoned advocates extend a helping hand to local advocates in need of support in their current endeavors or aspiring to embark on new initiatives. With a network comprising over 80 culturally diverse and dynamic mentors spanning the breadth of the United States and its territories, the WOCN Mentor Project embodies the spirit of collaboration, guidance, and empowerment. The Mentor Project has a commitment to fostering meaningful mentoring relationships between ad- vocates in the realm of anti-violence against women and their WOCN mentors. These mentors play a pivotal role in shaping the professional growth and development of mentees by providing invaluable guidance, serving as role models, offering diverse perspectives, and facilitating networking oppor- tunities. Through strategic partnerships with key entities like the Coalition Advocates and Attorneys Net- work and the Domestic Violence Resource Network, WOCN has spearheaded initia- tives to examine public policy through a lens that centers the experiences of communities of color.

I n the annals of history, 1997 marks a piv- otal moment when a group of visionary wom- en of color convened to address the pressing challenges confronting advocates and activists within the violence against women movement. This historic gathering laid the foundation for what would eventually evolve into the formida- ble force known today as the Women of Color Network (WOCN). Over the years, WOCN has emerged as a national platform where women of color can engage in dialogue, forge networks, mobilize communities, and access essential re- sources to bolster their advocacy efforts. Central to WOCN's mission is the commitment to providing women of color with invaluable access to information that might otherwise remain beyond their reach. Through tailored leadership training programs covering crucial topics such as fundraising, program develop- ment, and public policy, WOCN equips women of color with the skills and knowledge neces- sary to navigate the intricacies of advocacy work. WOCN remains steadfast in its dedication to promoting independent, women of color-led initiatives that are uniquely positioned to ca- ter to the needs of diverse communities. The WOCN Resource Guide stands as a testament to this commitment, showcasing over 200 women of color activists and 60 culturally-spe- cific programs nationwide. Through Mentor Site Visits, WOCN offers on-site technical as- sistance to women of color-led programs, am- plifying their impact and reach within under- served communities. As trailblazers in advocacy and activism, WOCN has continually advocated for the ex- amination of policies at local, state, federal, and tribal levels, providing women of color with platforms to amplify their voices and effect tangible change. From hosting focus groups to address critical issues like child welfare systems and domestic violence to convening national conferences focused on economic security for survivors, WOCN remains at the forefront of shaping the discourse on issues that profoundly affect women of color.
