A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 10

A very warm welcome back to our Year 10s! As a pastoral team we have loved seeing them back in school and really taking on the Key Stage 4 role with pride. This week I know students have been making positive starts in their new GCSE lessons and we are very happy to hear from teachers about their focus and engagement in their new lessons. Ms Tongue delivered an engaging assembly about ‘International Democracy Day’ this week. She also praised the Year 10s for the calm manner in which they entered the hall and their uniform. This was a very positive start for our students and myself and Mrs Dhir hope that this continues in the term. In English lessons, students have been delivering a speech about books they have read to their classes - this is a wonderful opportunity to share reading recommendations and focus on the value of reading outside of the curriculum. If you would like to discuss books with your child/ren then please look at the Waldegrave Website and our recommended book list for Year 9-10. as well asinformation about reading competitions and schemes which we implement at different points in the school to support reading at Waldegrave. Our extra curricular clubs will be up and running in the next couple of weeks, please tell your child/ren to keep a look out for the Google Classroom post. We encourage students to participate in clubs and while we know that as GCSEs grow nearer, as a team we know the value of ‘switching’ off from school and engaging in something fun and enjoyable! Later this term the school’s Performing Arts Team will be directing a performance of My Fair Lady. We are looking for donations of black, white or black & white hats/fascinators, in any condition, shape or size, as we will be decorating and modifying these. Please hand in any donations at Reception. Lastly please note school photos are taking place on 17 and 18 September. We would appreciate your support in ensuring pupils are wearing correct uniform. Please see uniform policy here. We hope they have another fabulous week ahead!

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘Things a Bright Girl Can Do’ by Sally Nicholls

Set in the early twentieth century, this novel follows three brave young women as they all become involved in the Suffragette movement. I loved how Nicholls brought the time period to life, showing what it felt like to be a woman and girl during that turbulent time. But if historical novels aren’t usually your thing, don’t be put off. It feels really modern and fresh, exploring issues like class differences as the three main characters come from different backgrounds. There is also a beautiful love story between two of the characters. It has something for everyone!
