Over the past 5 weeks myself, Scott McLean and Rebecca Sutton have had the privilege of stepping in to the shoes of our inspiring Primary Campus Principal, Marcus Abney - Hastings who has been sharing his skills and expertise at Norris Bank Primary School for Term 2. Firstly, it has been a wonderful opportunity to gain a deeper insight and bear witness to the hard work from all our staff and to see the time and effort put in, to ensure quality programs that are fun and engaging. Our staff are diverse, flexible and committed to the needs of our students and leave no stone unturned to ensure this is at the forefront of everything we do. In addition to this, it has been reinvigorating to have the time to speak to our parent and carer community and to continue building our partnership to ensure we are providing a strong platform for student learning and wellbeing. Your involvement in your child ’ s education is invaluable, and it is through this collaboration that we can create a thriving learning community where every student can succeed. We have concluded work with our Year 4 - 12 students regarding the statewide Attitudes to School Survey. This survey allows students to voice their thoughts about their teachers, our school and how they are feeling at school. This data is the cornerstone of everything we do here at The Lakes and compares us to every school in Victoria. Our data has continued to grow and has provided us with pivotal feedback for us to effectively support our students.

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter PRINCIPAL REPORT

As you may have noticed, work on our double turfed basketball court has begun and we are very excited for this to be completed in Term 3. We are thrilled to have another space in our school to engage students during recess and lunch and to enhance our HPE program. We are very grateful for all the hard work that has been conducted behind the scenes from Marcus to get this project off the ground. Although we have missed him in Term 2, his impact on our school community has continued to be profound.

Semester 1 reports will be coming out very soon and we look forward to these being the basis of important discussion between teachers, students and families to reflect, move forward and celebrate the amazing work from everyone to support student learning. The work, skills and initiatives that we see from our students every day is phenomenal. We are all in a privileged position to be part of our students educational journey.

We would like to say thank you to our staff, students, families, Bill, Bonnie and Marcus for working with and giving us an exciting opportunity. In saying this, we look forward to having Marcus back in Term 3!

STUDENT PERSPECTIVE

PRIMARY REFLECTION MATZU & WILLIAM YEAR 1 SRC

Term 2 has been a very long, fun Term for us in Year 1. On Thursday, 13th, we had a special Winter Woolies Day at school. It was so much fun! All the students got to dress up in cozy pajamas, Oodies, and warm clothes. Even the teachers joined in on the fun and dressed up too in their oodies and pajamas, which was funny. We also had the opportunity to watch a production during this term, and it was such an exciting experience for all of us. Not only did we enjoy watching our friends perform, but we also got to see the Secondary students showcase their talents on stage. It was a memorable day filled with lots of laughs. The Year 1 students have been focusing on being kind and polite to each other, our friends and teachers. We ’ ve been learning about giving compliments to our friends and showing empathy in the school yard. We ’ ve also been creating our exciting Inquiry project. The Year 1 cohort has been creating Hairy Mclary ’ s Town. We ’ ve been really focusing on our teamwork building skills in our teams, to work together as a cohort. We ’ ve been using art resources to create our town, which includes buildings, homes, a school, parks and trees. It ’ s been so much fun!

SECONDARY REFLECTION YEAR 11 SRC

Throughout the academic year thus far, the Year 11 cohort, has been adapting to the level of professionalism demanded in our senior classes. This includes conscientiously preparing for our upcoming mid - year exams and SACs (School Assessed Coursework) in designated study spaces, where a quiet and focused atmosphere is maintained. Another aspect of personal development for some of my peers has been learning to effectively manage the workload, notably the considerable amount of homework per - subject we receive. This process has involved refining our time management skills and making conscientious choices about how to allocate our valuable free time and sleep to maintain focus on our academic responsibilities. In addition, students enrolled in vocational majors had the opportunity to participate in the Grand Prix excursion, aimed at deepening their understanding of automotive engineering and related fields. The academic year so far has been an incredible journey of personal and academic growth, and we eagerly anticipate the remainder of the year to continue fostering our skills and knowledge.

WHOLE - SCHOOL SEMESTER 1 PERFORMING ARTS SHOWCASE

On Thursday 6th June, The Lakes South Morang College presented our very first whole - school Performing Arts Showcase ‘ Rhythm Revival ’. All students worked very hard this Semester to get their performances ready for the evening and each item showcased the excitement and pride each student felt. The showcase took the audience on a journey to see and hear music and dance

across the decades. There were a range of different performances including instrumental musical items, and dance spectaculars from the Year 1, 2, 4, 5, 7 and 10 classes. We were also treated to some dances choreographed by Lakes Alumni, Jemma Craig and Mischa Wright. On a personal note, it has been an absolute delight to teach the Primary students this Semester. I have loved getting to know these wonderful kids and their excitement and enthusiasm around music, dance and drama has reminded me of why I love teaching. I ’ m looking forward to commencing work on our next showcase for Semester 2 with the Preps, Year 3 and Year 6 students. The Performing Arts Team are very proud of all of The Lakes students. We hope all who came to see Rhythm Revival last Thursday enjoyed the evening as much as those performing! Stay tuned for information regarding our second Performing Arts Showcase taking place in Term 4.

EXCITING DEVELOPMENTS IN DISABILITY INCLUSION AT THE LAKES THIS SEMESTER

At The Lakes we believe in fostering a community where everyone feels valued, respected, and included. As part of our ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion, we are excited to share the latest updates about our Disability Inclusion Program. This initiative aims to ensure that all students, regardless of their abilities, have equal opportunities to succeed and thrive in our school environment. This Semester has seen significant advancements in the Disability Inclusion space at the College.

UNDERSTANDING OUR DISABILITY INCLUSION PROGRAM

The Disability Inclusion Program at The Lakes is designed to create a supportive and inclusive atmosphere for students with disabilities. Our goal is to provide an environment where every student can access the resources and opportunities they need to achieve their full potential.

THE KEY PRIORITY AREAS OF FOCUS THIS SEMESTER HAVE BEEN:

Enhanced Individual Education Plans (IEPs): We are dedicated to improving and developing IEPs that accurately reflect each student's unique needs and the supporting strategies required for their success. Integration with Compass: We have successfully rolled out IEPs onto Compass, ensuring that these essential documents are easily accessible and manageable. Standardised Recording Processes: The College has implemented whole - school recording processes to accurately track and

As part of the Disability Inclusion profile meetings, previously Program for Students with Disabilities applications, the school, and families, are required to provide evidence of substantial or extensive adjustments being made to support students across 31 key areas (shown in the table below). By prioritising Disability Inclusion at The Lakes, we are committed to creating an inclusive and supportive environment where every student can thrive.

WELLBEING: HOW WAS YOUR DAY? Have you ever asked your young person how their day was, what they learnt, and, who they played with - only to get a one or two word response? It can be difficult to reconnect with your young person after a long and busy day when minimal information is offered.

Why not try some of the following questions with your young person. This could be done when picking them up from school, around meal times or before bed.

• What made you smile today?

• In what ways were you creative?

At The Lakes South Morang College we are constantly asking children to critically reflect upon their learning, their strengths and their actions. The act of allowing time and space for a child to process the question and formulate an answer is important. Just as important, is our capacity for deep and active listening.

• Did you help get the chance to help anyone today?

• When were you brave today with your learning?

• When did you have to problem - solve today? How did you do it?

• How were you able to show kindness today?

• What would you like to work on tomorrow?

It is important that parents/carers provide a reason for unexplained attendance. This is done through Compass. Please watch this video for further instructions

HOW TO VIEW YOUR CHILD ’ S LEARNING TASK RESULTS: Throughout Term 2 students have completed assigned Common Assessment Tasks (CATs) for specific subjects on both the Primary and Secondary Campuses. Teachers have provided feedback on these tasks. To view the tasks and feedback for specific CATs please follow these steps to view a ‘ Learning Task ’ in Compass. If you are still having any issues or have any concerns please contact your child ’ s Learning Coach.

ANAPHYLAXIS

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that occurs after exposure to an allergen. The most common allergens for school - aged children are nuts, eggs, cow ’ s milk, fish, shellfish, wheat, soy, sesame, latex, certain insect stings and medication. All students at The Lakes South Morang College who are diagnosed by a medical practitioner as being at risk of suffering from an anaphylactic reaction must have an Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan. When notified of an anaphylaxis diagnosis, the College is responsible for developing a plan in consultation with the student ’ s parents/ carers.

Parents and carers must:

• obtain an ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis from the student ’ s medical practitioner and provide a copy to the College as soon as practicable

• immediately inform the College in writing if there is a relevant change in the student ’ s medical condition and obtain an updated ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis

• provide an up - to - date photo of the student for the ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis when that Plan is provided to the College and each time it is reviewed

• provide the College with a current adrenaline autoinjector for the student that has not expired

participate in annual reviews of the student ’ s Plan.

To reduce the risk of a student suffering from an anaphylactic reaction at The Lakes South Morang College, we have put in place the following strategies:

• staff and students are regularly reminded to wash their hands before and after eating

students are discouraged from sharing food

• garbage bins at the College remain covered with lids to reduce the risk of attracting insects

• gloves must be worn when picking up papers or rubbish in the playground

• College and canteen staff are trained in appropriate food handling to reduce the risk of cross - contamination

general use adrenaline autoinjector are stored in the offices

• off - site activities include risk minimisation strategies for students at risk of anaphylaxis including supervision requirements, appropriate number of trained staff, emergency response procedures and other risk controls appropriate to the activity and students attending.

ATTENDANCE - EVERY DAY COUNTS

If you are aware that your child will not be attending school due to illness or other circumstances, please contact either office to ensure our attendance records are accurate.

Private property brought to school by students, staff or visitors is not insured and the Department of Education does not accept any responsibility for any loss or damage.

Ways of communicating absences include:

Parents and carers are reminded that the Department of Education does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students. Parents and carers of students who do not have student accident insurance/ ambulance cover are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance/transport and any other transport costs.

As required by the Department of Education, all schools must notify parents/carers informing that their child is absent. Please inform the office of absences before 10am each morning.

CSEF (CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUND) The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps, and sporting activities.

It is important that funding made available in 2024 supports students to participate in school trips, camps, and sporting activities this year rather than being held for future years. This funding can also be used in conjunction with any funding accrued from previous years. If you applied for CSEF through our school last year, you do not need to complete an application form this year, unless there has been a change in your family circumstances. If you would like to apply for the first time, please contact the Primary Campus office on 9404 9000 or Secondary Campus office on 9401 3919 and ask for an application form. You can also download the form, and find out more about the program and eligibility, on the Department of Education and Training ’ s Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund web page.

If you have a valid means - tested concession card, such as a Veterans Affairs Gold Card, Centrelink Health Care Card, or Pensioner Concession Card, or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible. There is also a special consideration category for asylum seeker and refugee families. Payment amounts this year are $150.00 for eligible primary school students and $250.00 for eligible secondary school students. Payments are made direct to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions, and sporting activities for the benefit of your child. Foundation and Year 7 government school students who are CSEF recipients are also eligible for a uniform voucher. Schools are required to make applications on behalf of parents, so please register your interest at the school.

Check with the school office if you are unsure, and please return completed forms to the school office as soon as possible.

The Photographing, Filming and Recording Students Consent Form is provided by The Lakes South Morang College at enrolment. Recent Departmental changes to this policy mean that this now only has to be completed once during your child ’ s educational journey at The Lakes. As a component of our transition to Compass, all families across the College will be sent a message on Compass or contacted by a member of staff in regards to Permission to Publish for your child provided at enrolment. If at any time parents/carers wish to give or withdraw their consent, they can by contacting the College or completing the form below.

To update or make changes to your Photographing, Filming and Recording consent, please download and complete this form before returning to the front office.
