Creating Your Legacy Through Retirement Assets

Retirement accounts — such as IRAs, 401(k)s or 403(b)s — are often among the largest assets people own, sometimes even greater than real estate. While these funds are designed to support you during your lifetime, they can also be one of the most powerful ways to leave a legacy for future generations. When retirement assets are passed on to non-spousal heirs, they are taxed as ordinary income and must be liquidated within 10 years. That can dramatically reduce the gift your loved ones receive. But when those same assets are shared with TPT, every dollar is used to enrich lives with trusted journalism, lifelong learning and stories that connect us. Consider Michelle McBride, a retired business executive with $500,000 in her retirement plan. Wanting to leave a lasting impact, Michelle designated 40% of her account to the TPT Foundation. That decision ensured that $200,000 would fully support the mission of public media, without being reduced by income or estate taxes. Making this kind of gift is simple. Complete a Beneficiary Designation Form with your plan administrator, no attorney required! The designation is revocable, meaning you can adjust it at any time, and it passes outside of probate, making administration easier for your loved ones. Beneficiary forms are also available for life insurance, commercial annuities, bank accounts and investment accounts. If you’d like to explore how your retirement assets could support the community you care about, contact Mike Klinefelter, TPT’s Planned Giving Officer, at plannedgiving@tpt.org or 651-229-1520. Because TPT cannot provide legal or financial advice, we encourage you to consult your professional advisors.
