A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9

Year 9 has had a wonderful first full week back in school. They have started the school year with positivity and excellent engagement which has been lovely to see. It has been inspiring seeing our students getting to grips with their new timetables. Having newly mixed classes is a great opportunity for your child to get to know other students in the Year group. It will also hopefully help our students build resilience in the lead up to GCSE options classes - where they will be mixed based on their choices across the whole year. In our Year 9 assembly this week we discussed the year ahead and how we can set clear, specific goals, break them into smaller steps, and create a plan to achieve them. We talked about how to review your past year for lessons learned, embrace new habits, set a positive mindset and that prioritising your wellbeing is key. Over the next term, as part of a focus on wellbeing, Year 9 will be engaging in a new ‘MakeMoves’ initiative which encourages daily movement through music. Tutors have loved hearing about the many sporting, dance and creative activities our Year 9s have participated in over the summer. Mabel J, 9EBH is a keen rower who over the weekend was awarded a Jack Petchey Award at Walbrook Rowing Club. She was recognised for her Rowing achievement and teamwork at the club. Well done! If your child has achieved an award/level or grade in a particular extra-curricular area, then we always love to hear about it and want to celebrate with them. If you wish to share an achievement with us then please email the hub (see contact details below) with the subject line: FAO Mrs Lyddon [students name, form][topic]. Following a great start to the year we will continue to focus on getting back into good routines in terms of punctuality, attendance and uniform. I want to say well done to all our students for adhering to the uniform policy and parents for supporting us with this. We are looking forward to another great week ahead. Next week we will have the final set of school photographs for our cohort. Please can we ask that you help support us upholding the uniform policy and minimal makeup. Later this term the school’s Performing Arts Team will be directing a performance of My Fair Lady. We are looking for donations of black, white or black & white hats/fascinators, in any condition, shape or size, as we will be decorating and modifying these. Please hand in any donations at Reception. Looking forward to another great week!

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘Things a Bright Girl Can Do’ by Sally Nicholls Set in the early twentieth century, this novel follows three brave young women as they all become involved in the Suffragette movement. I loved how Nicholls brought the time period to life, showing what it felt like to be a woman and girl during that turbulent time. But if historical novels aren’t usually your thing, don’t be put off. It feels really modern and fresh, exploring issues like class differences as the three main characters come from different backgrounds. There is also a beautiful love story between two of the characters. It has something for everyone!
