Pacific Northwest & Coastal California Zone

Annual Bluegrass Seedheads Research has shown fall is the time to start controlling next spring’s annual bluegrass seedheads since seedhead formation is initiated in fall under shorter days and cooler temperatures. Applications of Proxy ® in late fall plus spring improve control and consistency of control over the traditional spring-only applications. With the extended seedhead production in the Pacific Northwest, superintendents and researchers have found that up to five spring applications of Proxy may be needed following the fall application for maximum seedhead control.

Application

Timings

Product and use rate per 1,000 st. ft.

With the snow mold fungicide application or after growth slows

Proxy ® 5 fl. oz. + Stressgard ® -containing fungicide

Late fall application

Always more effective to be early than late on spring applications. Initial application can be scheduled by: • Boot stage of annual bluegrass seedhead • Forsythia bloom • 150-200 Growing Degree Days base

First spring application

Proxy 5 fl. oz. + Stressgard-containing fungicide

32 (GDD32) starting January 1st • 50 GDD50 starting February 1st

Proxy 5 fl. oz. + (Primo Maxx ® 0.125 fl. oz. or Anuew ® 2 fl. oz./A or Anuew EZ 4.4 fl. oz./A and/or Stressgard-containing fungicide) Proxy 2.5 fl. oz. + (Primo Maxx 0.063 fl. oz. or Anuew 1 fl. oz./A or Anuew EZ 2.2 fl. oz./A) Proxy 5 fl. oz. + (Primo Maxx 0.125 fl. oz. or Anuew 2 fl. oz./A or Anuew EZ 4.4 fl. oz./A)

Second spring application

3-4 weeks after initial spring application

2-week intervals

Additional applications until seedhead production ceases

4-week intervals

PRO TIP : In areas with intense annual bluegrass seedheads, superintendents will often make the fall and spring application of Proxy ® at 5 oz./1000 sq. ft. and then include 2.5 oz./1000 of Proxy every two weeks until seedheads cease. Like with nitrogen, preemergence herbicides, and other turf-applied products, Proxy is also highly effective with low rates at frequent intervals
