It has been lovely to welcome the whole school community back to Waldegrave over the last two weeks, the excitement of friends reunited after the summer break and the energy of our new Year 7s are some of the great joys of starting a new academic year! Pupils, reinvigorated after the

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER
summer break have now settled back into calm, focused learning. I am proud to say that our students have been living up to our school values and since term began I have seen a lot of kindness around the school. New pupils have been helped with navigating the school grounds, busy corridors and the lively canteen at lunchtimes! Government proposed electoral reform will mean our Year 8 students will be old enough to vote in the next general election and as Monday 15 September is International Day of Democracy, I have been delivering assemblies exploring the development of democratic values in the UK. This day is a timely reminder of how important it is for our society to be able to disagree agreeably. I would like to thank the parents who attended our Year 12 Information Evening on Tuesday. I hope that you found Mr Bannister’s presentation helpful, which you can find here on the new school website. Lastly, I would like to remind parents that we encourage students to walk or use public transport on their journeys to and from school, healthier both for students and our environment. Thank you for respecting this as traffic congestion from school parents in the road endangers not only our Fifth Cross Road neighbours but our students as well.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 8
A big welcome back to our wonderful Year 8 students! I hope you’ve all had a fantastic break and are feeling refreshed and ready to dive into the new school year.
One to look out for throughout this academic year, all our Year 8 students will have the opportunity to spend one day being a ‘student receptionist’. The information has been relayed to them via our tutor programme and we have a rota system in place which avoids disruption of any learning. This is a great opportunity for students to develop their leadership skills and confidence, whilst experiencing aspects of the role within a school envi- ronment. This week I hosted, as the new Head of Year, a welcome back assembly where I reminded Year 8 about our school expectations and dug into our school ethos of Enjoy, Achieve and Empower and what it means to the students at Waldegrave. Later this term the school’s Performing Arts Team will be directing a performance of My Fair Lady. We are look- ing for donations of black, white or black & white hats/fascinators, in any condition, shape or size, as we will be decorating and modifying these. Please hand in any donations at Reception. Lastly please note school photos are taking place on 17 and 18 September. We would appreciate your support in ensuring pupils are wearing correct uniform. Please see uniform policy here.
Here’s to a great start filled with exciting challenges, new friendships, and lots of learning. Let’s make this year one to remember!

BOOK OF THE MONTH
Being Miss Nobody by Tasmin Winter Miss Nobody is a book about a girl with selective mutism, who rarely speaks and even then only to her family and her very much trusted neighbour. Rosalind has to deal with being the ‘mute ant’ in her school and has lost all hope of having a social life when she is tasked with being the buddy of a new girl at school. Having to tour Ailisa is a big struggle but this is a turning point, as a great friendship blossoms leading Rosalind to challenge herself further and further with her speech. Little did she know on meeting Ailisa that she would encourage her to speak in an assembly in front of the whole school and reveal in this assembly that she was the author of the ‘blog’ about the rude students in school that accidentally went viral… I really enjoyed this book because it reminds me of how we all struggle with school life but eventually we manage to find the answer to the solution. Read this book if you liked the Lottie Brooke’s Diary series!
