T HERE’S A MOMENT that still gets me every time. A young diver looks through the viewfind- er for the first time underwater, and everything changes. The dive is no longer just skills and a guided tour. It develops a passion by teaching kids the ability to be present in the moment, to frame, document, and to share their experi- ences. For more than ten years, I’ve taught the PADI Digital Underwater Photog- rapher specialty through Kids Sea Camp. It remains one of the most joyful and effective programs we offer, and I believe it is one of the strongest specialty courses a dive shop can highlight for families that want to capture those moments to remember forever.

What the Course Delivers: Designed for divers and even snorkelers age 10 and up, the course teaches the fundamentals of digital underwater photography: composition, lighting, white balance, avoiding backscatter, and the simple SEA method – Shoot, Examine, Adjust. I also introduce basic Adobe editing tips so kids can refine their favorite images and contribute to our end-of-week slideshow. The real power, though, goes beyond the photos. Holding a camera steady demands the practice of excellent buoyancy. Framing a subject forces kids to slow down, look carefully, and stay present. Suddenly they are observing, identifying, and cataloging marine life instead of simply swimming past it. That shift builds confidence, patience, and a deeper con-
