Tim Linden Reflects on Nearly 40 Years of Telling Farmers’ Stories By Ellie Amesse

Tim Linden’s first contact with Western Growers was as a journalistic source while he was writing for an agricultural newspaper shortly after graduating college in the ‘70s. In 1983, Tim was hired at Western Growers to be the editor of our publication: a job that he has done faithfully for almost 40 years. Tim became an independent contractor in 1987, starting his own agricultural publishing company with Western Growers as one of his first clients.
Throughout his time at Western Growers, two of Tim’s favorite types of stories to write have been political stories about relevant issues in agriculture and profiles of farmers. He enjoys being able to tell the often-untold stories of people in agriculture. “Most of the people that you interview, they’re second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth generation farmers or growers, or brokers,” Tim said. “And I always took it as a responsibility; they don’t get their stories told very often.” Tim believes each farmer has a unique story to tell and a unique point of view. He enjoys getting to communicate those perspectives to the Western Growers membership, and to the agriculture industry at large. In January 2023, Tim began to scale back his work for the Western Growers publication as he prepares to wind down his career. He is confident in the ability of the Western Growers staff to fill the role that he is stepping back from. He plans to continue running his publishing company and doing freelance writing.
