Spotswood Hall on JMU’s historic Quad is under renovation. Once fully renovated, the newly renamed Alger Hall will be the only building in the Commonwealth entirely dedicated to living and learning civic engagement. Alger Hall’s transformation will house the James Madison Center for Civic Engagement, the new Civic Leadership Scholars Residential Learning Community for first year students, and the civic leadership minor in one dynamic building in the heart of campus. The Madison Center wing will feature a new dedicated entrance, private offices for staff and faculty, a civic engage- ment library, small conference room, and a grand meeting room. The multipurpose room on the first floor will be the main space for the civic leadership minor program. The residence portion of the hall will house 42 residents, one resident adviser (RA) and one hall director. The renovation preserves the hall’s historical value as one of the university’s oldest buildings while incorporating necessary updates. It was renamed Alger Hall in honor of

The Madison Center’s Grand Meeting Room. Modular table space allows the Center’s faculty and staff to collaborate with student Democracy Fellows on experiential learning projects. Faculty and staff offices line both sides of the space with quotations from James Madison and Jonathan R. Alger featuring prominently on the glass walls.

In the Ground Floor Lounge, glass walls separate the hall office, study lounge, laundry and vending rooms. It serves as the main shared space in the building for community gatherings and interactions and contains a large TV.

Alger Hall Naming Opportunities 8 The Ground Floor Lounge contains recreation equipment, flexible furniture, a community kitchen and an ice machine.

The Ground Level Lounge will be used for programming by hall staff and open to all residents for community use.
