What is the most exciting thing your council has done in recent years or is working on now?
ADDITIONAL LANGUAGES AND INTERCULTURAL COUNCIL (ALIC) Our Teacher Collaboration Program pro- vides release time for educators to work with colleagues to develop their language programs. The year-long Professional Learning Community of Practice connects teachers with a University of Alberta professor to explore plurilingualism and related research. Finally, the Language Teacher Bursary funds teachers pursuing professional learning of their choice, from French courses to graduate-level studies.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS COUNCIL (ELAC) The council has been very engaged in helping teachers to update text selections to bring more engaging, diverse and appropriately challen- ging texts to our students. It has led to many great collaborations across the province and between specialist councils.

INDIGENOUS EDUCATION COUNCIL (IEC) Oki/ tansi. The most exciting thing the council has done recently is host a cultural camp. Partici- pants actively joined in traditional teachings, ceremonies and commun- ity building. Elder Philip Campiou and other Know- ledge Keepers guided us through authentic cultural teachings. We continue to welcome all teachers who are passionate about meeting and working to- ward the TQS#5 standards and Reconciliation.
COUNCIL FOR INCLUSIVE EDUCATION (CIE)
SCIENCE COUNCIL (SC) Our growing collaboration with other specia- list councils provides meaningful professional learning opportunities for our members. Recently, we partnered with the Health and Physical Education Council (HPEC) on a joint conference in April 2026 that highlighted the interdisciplinary connections between science, health and physical education. Also, our well-respected Science Council journal continues to showcase innovative teaching practices and current issues in science education.
A recent highlight was the Celebrat- ing the Challenges Conference held in May 2025, which brought educa- tors together for rich learning and meaningful connection, reflecting our commitment to inclusive, brain- aligned and responsive educational practices across Alberta. We’re also proud of the growth of our podcast, Inclusive Chronicles: Tips and Tricks for Inclusion in Alberta, now in its third season.
Our April 2025 annual conference was a success, especially a hands-on “make and take” where participants used plasticine to create vibrant, Barbara Reid–inspired portraits. The closing cozy pajama party celebrated fantastic, inclu- sive picture books through shared stories and connection.
RELIGIOUS AND MORAL EDUCATION COUNCIL (RMEC) Our mission is to improve knowledge and understanding of religious and moral education.
