Neil Dawson has always enjoyed the freedom, spontaneity and escapism of painting. After becoming inspired during his travels, he rekindled his passion for art and is now known for his emotive city portraits.

FOREWORD
This new body of work from established artist Neil Dawson brings a new flavour of his signature style to his audience. The added element of photorealism in his methodology has afforded a different perspective to the city scenes for which he has won a legion of dedicated collectors. This new work, being both familiar and different, represents a new age for Dawson as we see him experiment with technique to deliver the dynamism of city life through fresh eyes. “I approached this work as I approach most new collections - looking for an evolution in the work that will marry older, successful and recognisable elements of my previous work with something that’s new and a bit different.” – Neil Dawson Dawson’s existing passion for photography was compounded when he completed a specialist six month course in the discipline, affording him greater acumen with his prized SLR camera. The result was a plethora of reference photography, rich with detail, shade and bursts of light such as he had not worked with before. The depth of these images spurred Dawson to approach his interpretation differently; the result is a presentation of cities so vibrant and alive, one can feel the hustle and bustle, hear the traffic and lose oneself in the urban landscape they offer.

I think the bright, vivid and complementary colours I use in my work is down to their influence.” – Neil Dawson Dawson’s depiction of rain gives an added dimension to these most recent artworks. Whilst Dawson may modestly refer to them as ‘happy accidents’, most art critics would argue that the majority of seminal evolutionary moments for artists are the marriage of such accidents with the eye to recognise progress, and the skill to develop it. Quite so with Dawson’s representation of rain; having experimented with a variety of utensils to achieve his desired outcome, he identified a particular tool that shapes the colours and light sources in his pieces to great effect. The rain softens the angular nature of the city scenes, and adds a gentle luminescence to the streets, creating a reality so authentic as to allow the viewer to feel the rain for themselves. “In this new collection I have specifically tried capture the essence of rain. Not only with the reflections but also with verticals, washing down the colours and altering shapes.” – Neil Dawson
BIOGRAPHY
Neil had always loved art as a child and whilst growing up at school. He enjoyed the freedom, spontaneity and escapism of painting and the way he could lose himself in the creative process.
Neil furthered his artistic education at Central Saint Martins College in London and continues to learn on a daily basis in the studio.
He found his course at Central Saint Martins very interesting and enjoyable although a change in direction saw him pursue a career in banking and he worked in the City after university, not picking up a paintbrush for many years. It was an extended period of travel that rekindled Neil’s love of art. Whilst travelling, his camera was his artistic outlet as he tried to capture elements of his new, exciting surroundings. When Neil got home, he dusted off the palette and paints in an attempt to recapture some of the sights and experiences from his time abroad.
He quickly realised how much he had missed creating art and hasn’t looked back since.
Neil’s subject is the urban environment and he continues to develop work inspired by the colour, vibrancy and energy of the city, which is constantly evolving and in a state of flux.
