Sassda Positions Training as a Strategic Investment
As South Africa’s stainless steel sector faces pressure to compete on quality, performance and lifecycle value, Sassda is using its training programme to address a skills need specific to the material. Its 2027 vision is to strengthen that role across the value chain, from first-time users to technical specialists.
Building knowledge across the value chain
Stainless steel is often selected for its durability and corrosion resistance, but those qualities do not deliver value by themselves. Performance depends on choosing the right grade for the environment, understanding how the material behaves, and handling, processing and maintaining it correctly. Gaps in that knowledge can lead to avoidable costs, poor product performance and advice that focuses on purchase price rather than whole-life value. The challenge for the sector is that stainless steel knowledge is needed well beyond engineering departments. Buyers and specifiers influence material selection; sales teams advise customers; workshop and warehouse employees handle and process the product; and managers make decisions about investment, maintenance and quality. Each role can affect the outcome. This gives Sassda a strategic role that extends beyond promoting stainless steel. As the industry association focused specifically on stainless steel, it can help build a shared base of knowledge across companies and occupations, connecting technical understanding with the practical decisions made throughout the supply chain.
Sassda’s 2027 training programme is therefore structured as a progression, from introductory awareness to advanced technical expertise. The self-paced Introduction to Stainless Steel course is aimed at newcomers and non-technical employees who come into contact with the material. It covers stainless steel’s basic properties, grades and uses, production, handling and maintenance. The Fundamentals of Stainless Steel course takes learners further through three weekly live online sessions. Its six modules cover classifications, grades, composition, properties and applications, as well as corrosion, manufacturing, product forms, contamination and handling. Participants complete an assessment, and the course carries one SAIMechE CPD point. For people who require deeper technical knowledge, the Advanced Stainless Steel course examines metallurgy, manufacturing, corrosion, mechanical properties, forming, machining and welding. Participants can choose a two-day
