BGSU Receives New Zünd Digital Cutter Funded By ICPF The International Corrugated Packaging Foundation (ICPF) announced its continued support of Bowling Green State University’s (BGSU) Packaging and Prototyping (P&D) Lab with a full grant of brand-new equipment. The newly installed Zünd Digital Cutter G3 M-2500 replaces equipment previously donated by ICPF in 2011, which enabled the establishment of the P&D Lab to service students in BGSU’s Visual Communication Technology (VCT) program. In replacing equipment that had reached the end of its functional life, this cutting table will allow the VCT program to continue building applied learning oppor- tunities for students. “ICPF was delighted to provide the grant and place-
ment of this machine at BGSU,” said ICPF President, Caitlin Salaverria. “ICPF’s long-standing partnership with BGSU has pro-
moted student awareness of corrugated packaging industry careers and allowed students to develop structural and graph- ic design skills to meet the needs of our industry. This donation will allow the VCT program to continue those efforts with nine courses affected by the new digital cutting table.” Through the VCT program, many BGSU alumni have gone on to achieve success- ful careers in corrugated packaging. “The experience from BGSU’s packag- ing lab and co-op program helped me find my passion for packaging design. Over the last decade I have excelled in the corrugat- ed industry because of the programs that BGSU was able to offer their students,” said Michael Flores, Packaging Design, Graphics & Lab Coordinator, Green Bay Packaging, Fremont, Ohio. Laney Fugett, Teaching Professor and Donna Trautman, Associate Professor add- ed, “The VCT Packaging and Prototyping Lab (P&P Lab) has been an integral part of our applied curriculum since the beginning of our relationship with ICPF that yielded the establishment of the lab in 2011-12. “We have worked continually to keep up the integrity of our commitment and the new Zünd digital cutting table ensures that we can provide relevant exposure for our students from design to the advanced manufacturing aspect of the corrugated packaging industry. “This lab empowers students from all levels to have hands-on experiences that will help prepare them for employment as they become skilled and knowledgeable in best practices. Golden West Packaging Unleashes Innovation
City of Industry, California based Golden West Packaging Group, formed around six years ago through the acquisi- tion of Cal Sheets, operates as part of a partnership con- sortium. Golden West Packaging comprises around ten converting plants, with the Golden West Stockton site be- ing the sole plant equipped with a corrugator, supplying various flutes to plants in Northern California and Wash- ington state.
The Stockton plant faced challenges with its under-uti- lized eProductivity Software Escada corrugator control system. With the leadership of Darwin Featherstone, Op- erations Manager, the company embarked on a strategic approach to re-awaken the system, improve the reliability of its corrugator, and address operational challenges.
“When I came on board at Cal Sheets, we attempted to update the Escada system; we discovered that many of our materials and hardware were obsolete. We proposed to corporate to purchase the new system to receive the benefits of better quality, faster run speeds, and more reli- ability,” comments Darwin. Golden West Stockton adopted a two-pronged ap- proach: fully utilizing the existing Escada system’s capa- bilities and holding the OEM accountable for machine status. Darwin continues, “The team from Escada came in prepared with a set of goals, ready to achieve them. We CONTINUED ON PAGE 20

assisted with our maintenance team. “I was impressed with the professionalism and dedica- tion – they were accommodating in explaining not only to my maintenance team but to the operators also – it was a structured communication, along the lines of: ‘Here’s what we found,’ ‘Here’s what the system can do for you,’ ‘Here’s how you take care of it,’ and above all ‘This is what needs to make it work.’ Our team appreciated it. “I’ve had a lot of experience with different systems in my 37-year career, and working with Escada was different – the preparation work before going live and the commu- nication between our teams made it smooth.” The installation was a resounding success, highlighted by quick buy-in from the wider business teams and nota- ble improvements in reliability and speed. The upgraded
system facilitated running orders at higher speeds imme- diately after going live Darwin continues, “We had an agriculture job that typ-
ically would run that at about 550 – 560 ft per min, and the day we went live, we ran that same order, 150 to 200 lineal ft per min faster. That was one of the immediate takeaways, and we’ve seen our crews pushing the speeds ever since. “In addition to the increase in speed, we are now experiencing less than 10 mins of downtime per shift. Before the upgrade, our bridge control wasn’t reliable, our sync splice was off, and we would experience many overruns that would lead to paper jams and stoppages. With Escada, we can now see the bridge control function and have dialed in our sync splice settings, which has been a success story. “This combination of higher throughput coupled with reduced waste has meant that we have not worked a whole five-day week since the first full week of Septem- ber (2023) – our MSF per corrugator hour has increased in less time – we’re running what we did in five days now in four – a 20 percent increase in productivity. There’s a big target on our sales teams to win more business. “I take every investment project me- thodically – within the next six months, I should be able to make up this investment cost in just waste savings alone. It’s a solid investment for us.” The partnership approach with Esca- da yielded positive results based on clear communication and a dedication to suc- cess. The company envisions a quick re- turn on investment and plans to explore additional technologies offered by Escada. Darwin concludes, “I’ve always worked with suppliers as a partnership; what I’ve

PRINTCHEK REPRESENTS A NEW FRONTIER IN PRINT QUALITY ASSURANCE FOR THE CORRUGATED CARDBOARD INDUSTRY PrintChek uses a series of line scan cameras to capture an image of each sheet across its entire span before being die-cut. Every sheet's size, rotation, and print quality are then compared to your set “golden standard” to identify defects as small as 2mm like skew, spots, hickeys, smears, color deviation, missing print, and more. Using PrintChek in conjunction with MeasurementChek allows you to remotely monitor production and quality statistics which you can then export via Excel for statistical analysis.

into CBC reinforces the pride and dedication to our cus- tomers and everyone in our organization. “We’re equipped to handle practically any graphic re- quirement a customer sends our way,” says Nagy. “And that’s not limited to end user customers. We have invest- ed in technology and equipment that not every box maker has or has a need for on a continual basis. We’re open to partnering with others in the industry who don’t have the same graphic capabilities. For instance, certain proj- ects may involve quantities that are too large for digital but not large enough for pre-print. We can help fill the gap. Converters may have the occasional need for UV coating. We can fill that gap too. We’re accustomed to being an outsource option, whether it’s a short term or long-term arrangement.” Over the past nine years CBC has experienced an al- most complete transformation which included a major building expansion and a new state-of-the-art Fosber 110- inch corrugator in 2018. “Our Fosber can run 5-7 million sq ft a day on two shifts. We offer a wide variety of flutes and board combinations,” says Nagy. “Everything from lightweight E flute to heavy doublewall combinations for produce, seafood, beverage and many other industries. For high graphic print applications, our combinations are typically E, EC, EB and even ET with a clay coat white out- side liner.”
These machines replaced older converting lines and up- dated CBC’s capacity and graphic capabilities to the in- dustry’s latest technology. “We’ve been providing custom- ers with high-graphic flexo print for over twenty years,” says Nagy. “These new machines replaced machines of similar size and function, but they have significantly im- proved graphic capabilities. They take our capabilities to a whole new level. We can provide higher print resolution, enhanced consistency, more high graphic capacity.” In total, CBC currently has eight converting lines includ- CONTINUED ON PAGE 28 JB Machinery ColorDry XL 3000 Final Flexo IR Dryer

ing a wax cascader and a specialty folder-gluer. CBC has taken advantage of the latest automation, printing, and quality control technology on the new con- verting lines. The 1228 and DRO are both full Bobst lines including Bobst pre-feeders and fully automatic palletiz- ers. Each machine also includes a full complement of JB Machinery products All three lines (including the new Bobst 924) are equipped with JB Machinery’s ColorDry XL3000 Final Flexo IR dryers with AutoDryer Control (ADC). AutoDryer Control automatically controls power output to the dryers removing that responsibility from the operators resulting in at least 20 percent less power usage. In addition to the ColorDry systems on all downs, the 7-color Bobst 1228 and 7 color Bobst DRO 1628 also have JB’s InKomand ink tem- perature management systems which automatically main- tains precise ink temperature, controlling viscosity and pH without operator intervention. Each machine is equipped with JB’s VisionMaster in-press dryer inspection and mon- itoring system. VisionMaster provides real-time video feed of the print areas and dryer surfaces making it quick and easy for operators to identify if and where sheets, debris or other issues may exist without physically visiting each section. Both machines also have JB ColorCure COLD UV systems giving CBC the capability to run a wide range of UV protective coatings and finishes.
