from M ormonism
Part Four in the Moving Personal Testimony of a Business Man H AVING been reared from child hood in the teachings of Mor- monism, I have a burden upon my heart to make known its unscrip- tural teachings. The story of how I was saved by the grace of God and shown the falsity of the Mormon doc trines and practices was covered in the March and April issues of The King’s Business. In the May number I began an exposé of the Mormon creed which I continue, using quotations from their own leaders. Salvation by Works Mormonism teaches salvation by works. I quote: “ Redemption from personal sins can only be obtained through obedience to the requirements of the gospel, and a life of good works” ( Compendium, hy Apostle F. D. Richards and Elder J. A. Little). In the Articles of Faith (1899 ed.) Apostle James E. Talmage says, “ The sectarian dogma of justification by faith alone has exercised an influ ence for evil since the early days of Christianity.” In the 1925 ed. of Ar ticles of Faith he makes the denuncia tion even stronger; he calls justification by faith alone “ this pernicious doc trine.” The Bible teaches salvation by grace alone—plus nothing: “ All our righteous nesses are as filthy rags” (Isa. 64:6). “ Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us” (Tit. 3:5). “ For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Eph. 2:8,9). “ Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” . (Acts 16:31). The Mormon Priesthood Most Latter-day Saints are familiar with the claims of a Mormon priesthood. I shall quote only one. From the Ar ticles of Faith: “ This people of the last days profess to have the Priesthood of the Almighty; the power to act in the name of God, which power commands respect both on earth and in heaven.” But the Bible teaches that the Lord Jesus Christ is the intermediary priest between God and man. “ There is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Tim. 2:5). Mormons claim to have had restored to them the Aaronic and Melchizedek priesthoods. But there is nothing in the Bible to indicate that any such orders of priests ever existed in the church of
By Einar Anderson Jesus Christ. Anyone familiar with the Bible knows that the Aaronic priest hood belonged to the Jews alone. When Christ came and died on the cross of Calvary, He fulfilled the types of the Old Testament priesthood and offerings, at which time this priesthood was done away with forever. That is the teach ing of the entire epistle to the Hebrews. As to the higher priesthood, “after the order of Melchizedek,” the Scrip tures make it clear that none ever held it but the Lord Jesus Christ. It was never passed on to a human being. There is a royal priesthood of all true believers in Christ. “ But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light” (1 Pet. 2:9). Read also Revelation 1:6 and Hebrews 13:15. Salvation for the Dead Mormonism teaches salvation for the dead by proxy, water baptisln: “ Every man that has been baptized and belongs to the Kingdom has a right to be baptized for those who have gone before; and as soon as the law of the gospel is obeyed here by their friends who act as proxy for them, the Lord has administrators there to set them free” (Priesthood and Church Govern ment, p. 354, published by the Deseret News Press in 1939, Salt Lake City, Utah). What about baptizing for the dead? This is mentioned just once in the Bible; it is not a command of the Lord, nor is it sanctioned by Paul. He simply refers to it as an existing practice. “Now ff Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?” (1 Cor. 15:12). Paul wants to know why they should baptize for the dead, unless they believed in a future resurrection; otherwise it would have no significance (1 Cor. 15:29). The Mor mon Church observes and practices this custom today. But in no way can this verse be construed as sanctioning such a ceremony. The Bible teaches that there is no further chance of salvation for the dead. When a person dies, he either goes into the presence of God, .or into a Christless eternity. “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord” (2 Gor. 5:8). “ And it came to pass that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom; the rich man also died, and was TH E K I N S ' S B U S I N E S S
