man, but also to perform willingly a work of redemption. He had to be able to redeem; he had to be a free man himself; and he had to possess the price of redemption. Boaz met all of these qualifications. Naomi and Ruth recog nized this fact and were acting upon it. Compare 2:2. Of course, the kinsman-redeemer of the Old Testament was a type of Christ. True faith is linked to Him from whom all salvation comes. Faith Is Rewarded (4:14-17) The fruit of the faith of both Ruth and Naomi was a happy marriage and home, a little son who became one of the forbears of the Messiah, and a pure ex ample of love that has blessed multi tudes through the centuries. One can never estimate the rich rewards of a faith confidently reposed in the Lord Jesus Christ. It results in blessings many of which will not be realized until the soul appears at the bema seat of Christ. , Helps for the Children At Naomi’s House (Ruth 1:22; 2:1, 17, 18; 4:14-17) Memory Verse: “ Be ye kind one to an other” (Ephesians 4:32). A Jewish family had moved to the land of Moab during a famine. After the death of the father, the two sons married, and they and their mother, Na omi, lived in Moab for ten years. Even tually the two sons died. Naomi decided to return to her own land, for she had heard that again the Lord had given her Pointers on the Lesson The memory verse for this week’s les son well expresses the leading thought of the lesson, “ A friend loveth at all times” (Prov. 17:17). The love of a true friend is not changeable like the weather; it remains constant under all circumstances. The story of Jonathan and David is a splendid illustration of true love, and a faithful reminder of that perfect love which Christ has for His own. Jesus- is the Friend that “ stick- eth closer than a brother.” “ Having, loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end” (John 13:1). May the consideration of the wonderful love which existed between Jonathan and David help us to see more vividly what true love is and to think of Him who is the perfect Lover of man’s soul. Let us note the following things about this love: True Love Is Persistent (18:3) There was a distinct natural reason why Jonathan should not have loved David, for David was chosen by God to J U N E , 1 9 4 8

people plenty of food. Naomi’s two daughters-in-law walked part pf the way with her. At last, she told them to re turn to their parent’s homes. Orpah returned, but Ruth clung-to Naomi, say ing, “ Whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.” As soon as they had reached their destination, Ruth found a field belong ing to Boaz, her husband’s wealthy rela tive, where she could glean some wheat for Naomi and herself. Eventually Ruth and Boaz were mar ried. At the birth of their son there was great rejoicing. Through this son, the Son of God finally came to. the earth in human form. Naomi’s rejoicing was great because of God’s rich blessings to her after her great sorrows in the land of Moab. God had also blessed Ruth for respecting and loving her mother-in- law. Doubtless Ruth had learned many valuable lessons from Naomi and in re turn, she had been a comfort and a help to Naomi. Sometimes boys and girls speak of their parents as “ the old man” and “the old lady.” They do not show respect for those who are older than themselves. They make fun of the aged. Christian boys and girls will obey God’s command to “honour thy father and thy mother.” They will realize that most of the things which they learn are taught by those who are older than they. Kindness will be shown always in their speech and their actions with older people. God has promised blessings to those who honor their father and mother. succeed Saul and thus inherit the throne. But this made no difference to Jonathan, for .the two men made a covenant cal culated to bind them together through every experience. Such covenants are frequent in the East. They are ofttimes ratified by impressive ceremonies in the presence of witnesses, thus proclaiming to the world that those entering into the covenant are to be brothers for life. Evidently that was what was in the mind of Jonathan and David. They sought to safeguard their love for each other so that nothing could break it. The world needs more of this sort of unselfish love. True Love Is Expressive (18:4) True love seeks ways in which to man ifest itself. Jonathan gave David one of his robes and other gifts of honor. In the East, for anyone to receive a part of the dress belonging to a king or his heir was deemed the very highest honor that could be paid a subject. Love de lights in honoring its objects. A love that does not reveal itself in generous 1948 FRIENDSHIP -4; 19:1-6
