Year 12 Bulletin 20.09.24

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12

Year 12 students have had a busy week settling into their lessons. It has been wonderful to see how they have all settled into the routine of the Sixth Form, as well as hearing how much they are enjoying their A Level subjects. On Tuesday, Mr Bannister and I were delighted to meet the parents and carers of Year 12 students as part of our annual information evening. We covered rules and procedures in the Sixth Form, what students need to do to excel academically and shared information about pastoral support. Yesterday, the Social Sciences department kicked-off this academic year’s talks given by University staff. The topic was “Rethinking and Researching 21st century girls’ s moking and vaping practices”. It was an excellent talk from St. Mary’s University, very informative and well-attended by the students, who all found it utterly fascinating. On Monday morning, Mr Montgomery, Head of Politics, Economics and EPQ, is leading the Year 12 Assembly to launch the Waldegrave MBA. This is an enterprise programme with participating students taking part in the Tycoon Competition, where teams of pupils will set up and run their own businesses. Students who took part in this before found it exciting and extremely useful. Finally, Year 12 students were briefed last week about our fortnightly enrichment program, which is due to commence on Wednesday. Next week, they will all be informed which activity they will take part in, as well as its venue.

MR STAVROU, HEAD OF YEAR 12

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Educated by Tara Westover

“My life was narrated for me by others. Their voices were forceful, emphatic, absolute. It had never occurred to me that my voice might be as strong as theirs.” Describing her journey from a childhood with her extreme survivalist family in rural Idaho, where she didn’t go to school, to Cambridge and Harvard universities, Westover’s story is moving and shocking. With memorable detail, she describes how she sought to form her own identity as she grew to adulthood and the painful process of learning to trust her own perception of the world, not the warped indoctrination of her father. It’s so interesting to read alongside Megan Phelps-Roper’s memoir Unfollow, which explores similar themes.
