INTERESTING PEOPLE

For over 30 years, Dr. Ernie Fernandez of Clinical Pediatric Associates has guided families from first cries to college drop-offs—offering trusted, around-the-clock pediatric care, free newborn consultations, and a compassionate presence in the lives of countless children. Dr. Ernie’s Enduring Impact on Park Cities Families

Sara (Shuford) & Boyd Oliver, Ben (1), Bo (8) & Emily (6) “Giving my kids the best care is so important to me, and being a patient of Dr. Fernandez has truly been one of the biggest blessings. He was my pediatrician growing up, and now he cares for my own children with the same warmth, wisdom, and dedication. He is incredibly thorough and knowledgeable, and somehow still manages to make you feel like you’re doing an amazing job as a mom. We are so grateful for him!”

Elizabeth (Shuford) & Brian Conroy, Emma Kate (11), Claire (9) & Meredith (7) “Dr. Ernie was my pediatrician for over 20 years and I’m so thankful that I get a full circle moment and my children get to experience the exceptional care from my same Pediatrician! Dr. Ernie has such a calming presence and always makes everything feel like it will be more than ok!”

Emily (Shuford) & Isaac Isom, Skylar (15), Charlie Mae (13) & Henry (7)

DR. ERNIE FERNANDEZ S ince the mid-1950s, Clinical Pediatric Associates has been serving the pediatric needs of the Park City families. Clinical Pediatric Associates has a driving passion to serve patients seven days a week, understanding the immediate need for children’s care and the availability of working parents. The doctors work diligently to see every patient who ask to be seen on a daily basis. Dr. Ernie Fernandez joined the group in 1991 and has served generations of families since then. Dr. Fernandez believes in this type of “generational” care and creating a trusting partnership with the families he serves. He is always available for calls to comfort parents and provide treatment for his young patients. One of his favorite acts as a pediatrician is providing newborn consultation, a service he provides for free. An example of this kind of generational care right here in University Park is the Shuford family. The Shuford family with Emily, Elizabeth, Sarah, and William was one of Dr. Fernandez’s first families that he took care of when he started with Clinical Pediatric Associates. Today, he takes care of Emily Shuford Isom’s son Henry, Elizabeth Shuford

Dr. Fernandez has had such a positive impact on our lives. My son never dreads going to the doctor and always leaves with a smile. I am so grateful for his gentle approach, patience in answering the millions of questions, his ability to keep you calm and make your child feel safe. I admire his compassion, kindness and dedication to his practice. We are truly blessed to have had 30+ years of the most wonderful healthcare provided by Dr. Ernie! —EMILY

Conroy’s daughters Emma Kate, Meredith, and Claire, and Sarah Shuford Oliver’s children Emily, Bo, and Ben. Dr Fernandez is a South Texas native and attended the University of Texas at Austin, UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, and completed his pediatric residency program at Children’s Health in Dallas. Besides being a partner at Clinical Pediatric Associates, he an Assistant Professor in the department of Pediatric Endocrinology at UT Southwestern Medical School. For the past 40 years Dr. Fernandez has also served as the Director of Camp Sweeney, the largest camp for children with diabetes in the country. Dr. Fernandez devotes many hours every day to the Camp Sweeney program. In the last four decades, Dr. Fernandez has completely revised the program from a recreational facility that provides medical treatment for children who have diabetes to a world‐ renowned medical rehabilitation treatment facility where children who have diabetes can still enjoy the benefits of a camping experience. In the 1980s, Dr. Fernandez developed a plan for a “new” Camp Sweeney, which began with a new way of thinking from

the staff. Counselors, medical staff, and other personnel are encouraged to think of the program as a mission to help children succeed medically, socially, and emotionally with their chronic illness. Today, Dr. Ernie and his partner Dr. Patrick Hieber provide exceptional pediatric care for children from birth until college. Every patient is worked in to make sure everyone is cared for in a timely manner. They welcome new patients and are available for free newborn consultations. ERIC WEINBERG Selected for FBI Youth Summer Leadership Program YOUNG ACHIEVER

through detailed agendas and careful communication—as key to his success. When asked who he admires most, Eric points to his mother, Olga. “Her combination of optimism and pragmatism has had a huge impact on me,” he shares. “She’s an effective leader in our family, and her resilience and realistic outlook inspire me to lead with strength and compassion.” With plans to attend a four- year university after graduation, Eric is well on his way to making a meaningful impact—both in University Park and beyond. We can’t wait to see where his talents and dedication will take him next.

UNIVERSITY PARK IS proud to shine a spotlight on one of its own rising stars— Highland Park High School student Eric Weinberg. Since moving to the neighborhood from Boston nearly five years ago, Eric has immersed himself in academics, athletics, community service, and leadership initiatives, all while maintaining a strong sense of balance and purpose. Eric is currently a dedicated member of the Highland Park Varsity Tennis Team and participates in a wide range of extracurriculars, including the University Park Youth Advisory Commission, Congressional Youth Advisory Council (for Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne), Highland Park Latin Club, Young Men’s Service League, Brother Bill’s Helping Hand Youth Council, and piano. His passion for leadership and public service was further ignited during a family trip to Washington, D.C., where a visit to FBI headquarters led him to discover the FBI National Academy Associates Youth Leadership Program (FBINAA YLP). After a competitive selection process, Eric was accepted into this prestigious program, which focuses on leadership development through rigorous academic and physical training guided by experienced law enforcement professionals. “This program deepened my interest in government, law, and leadership,” Eric says. “It challenged me to grow personally and adapt to new experiences, helping me better understand my own strengths and areas for development.” Eric is especially drawn to history, government, and the criminal justice system. He enjoys speaking and writing, and his natural leadership qualities have allowed him to step confidently into roles where he can make a difference. Balancing his many commitments is no easy feat, but Eric credits time management strategies— such as prioritizing tasks, maintaining a to-do list, and staying organized

Q uarter Acre, located on lower Greenville, is heaven for foodies. It’s chef, a native of New Zealand, offers a sophisticated menu with unique flavors and twists on seafood and steak staples. The atmosphere was one of my favorite parts – channeling a New Zealand feel with soft woods, light green touches, oyster shells dangling from the chandeliers and white fur accents. I convinced some out-of-town colleagues to try it with me and we were all impressed with the food. We started with the Texas Mushrooms which come with a soft-boiled egg and sour- dough toast for serving. Jessica Hoffmann is a University Park resident. For entrees, we had the Grilled Wagyu Beef Cheek, the Hot Bay Smoked Salmon and the Grilled Scallops. As you can see, each plate was a work of art and the flavor matched. The portions were sufficient – leaving you satisfied but not stuffed - and we shared the fried potato chunks and seasonal peas family style for the table.
