The menu has a large selection of both hot and cold starters ranging from oysters to Philly cheesesteak bites, which looked more like a dinner portion themselves. We took the server’s recommendation and opted for the roasted cauliflower with goat cheese and Calabrian chili oil, the yellowtail sashimi, and the beef carpaccio. The cauliflower was the table’s favorite, but I was partial to the yellowtail and carpaccio. I chose the Chicken Milanese with vodka rigatoni after seeing it go by and also at the server’s recommendation. It was topped with fresh burrata and served with a side of hot honey to drizzle on top. Other entrees we tried were the pork chop and lamb lollipops. One of our group also had the crab and avocado stack from the starter menu as a main course. All were cooked to perfection, and we discussed the food quality on the drive home. As you might expect from a steakhouse, the cocktail and wine menu will meet your needs, and we had good help from the sommelier in choosing a Barolo to pair with our food. All of us were pleased with our choices, and since no one ended up with a steak, I have a feeling we will be making a second visit. The price point definitely says celebratory event, but you won’t be disappointed. If you haven’t read the book, pick it up and make a reservation!

Brought to us by the same team as The Mexican, Evelyn is a relatively new addition to the Design District. It boasts a sprawling 10,000-foot space with seven separate dining areas, each with its own personality. Why seven? The restaurant is named for and channeling the 50s, 60s and 70s Hollywood vibe of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s book The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo . We sat in the Ruby Room, a lively bar area with fun music that has cozy lighting and, as you would expect given the name, red velvet booths. It had a very artistic window into another dining area that gave the impression you were watching that area through a movie screen. Like The Mexican, it also has a bathroom space that is selfie-worthy with large platformed raised mirrors lined with Hollywood-style bulb lights. We dined the day after Valentine’s Day and it was clear that many folks were still celebrating; Evelyn is a great place for that. A few hours in advance of our reservation, we got two reminders from the restaurant — one related to the dress code and one about the dining length for groups — this is not a quick in-and-out kind of place. It was fun to see folks in their fancy dress — including floor-length dresses and sparkles. We were dressed well — men in blazers and women in dresses — but not for prom.
