Year 10 Bulletin 20.09.24

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 10

As we settle into the new term it is a pleasure to see Year 10 students getting back into the routine and getting to grips with new timetables. The new mixed classes will give GCSE students an opportunity to meet students from outside of their tutor groups, forming new friendships. We are aware that many of our students are involved in activities outside of school. If your child receives an award or does something wonderful outside of school, please let us know by emailing the KS4 hub and we will be glad to celebrate their achievement by including it in our Year 10 newsletter. Congratulations to 10STH for getting the most e-praise points this week. They are closely followed by 10SPI in second place. Well done! There are lots of extra curricular activities going on at Waldegrave and we would encourage students to take part. Details of the new music clubs have been posted in the Year 10 tutor classrooms, interested students can take a look to learn more. The ultimate frisbee club has also restarted which is a great opportunity for students to try a new sport that they might not have tried before. Students are also welcome to visit our brand new library and say hello to our librarian Ms Croucher. There are lots of new books that students can borrow and take home to broaden their reading. As part of our commitment to ensuring that we do all we can to keep our children safe online, the school has introduced new monitoring software called Smoothwall. The software works on school managed devices, whether used at school or home. It works to support students to be able to enjoy their digital lives safely by monitoring their search/viewing information. The software alerts the school if it identifies there is a potential risk of harm to students, allowing us to follow up promptly and act on any concerns. Filtering at school is through our firewall, whilst at home parents will have set up their own safety settings.

Looking forward to another fabulous week!

MRS PORTEOUS, HEAD OF YEAR 10

BOOK OF THE MONTH

The Deathless Girls by Kiran Millwood Hargrave

A feminist, LGBT reimagining of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, this novel gives a back story and humanity to the soulless vampire women in the original novel, exploring where they might have come from and their lives before. It follows the lives of seventeen-year-old Lil and her twin sister Kizzy, when they are captured and enslaved by the cruel Boyar Valcar, taken far away from their beloved traveller community. I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys a gothic, tense story.
