“May is National Physiotherapy Month!” CELEBRATING NATIONAL PHYSIOTHERAPY MONTH

May, 2018

During the month of May, we appreciate the benefits of physiotherapy. Physiotherapy is a comprehensive treatment that helps patients regain the abilities they had prior to injury. Physiotherapy may also reduce the amount of pain you’re in from various conditions that cause chronic pain. Here are a few reasons why we should all appreciate physiotherapists.

HEALTH &FITNESS Sport Physiotherapy | Orthopedic Rehabilitation | Training May, 2018 “6 Reasons Physiotherapy Is The Best Choice!” CELEBRATING NATIONAL PHYSIOTHERAPY MONTH

1. Are first contact professionals. Few others, outside medicine, have this privilege. Awarded after many years of struggle and tests of our autonomy, first-contact status isn’t available throughout the world for physiotherapists, but it’s available in many countries. It’s a mark of our social capital and the high regard physiotherapists are held in by society at large. 2. Are diagnosticians. Becausemany physiotherapists can see people without a medical referral, they need to be able to differentially diagnose. That skill comes with a lot of expectations about physiotherapists’ safety, and ability to show consistently that they can handle the responsibility. 3. Are safe and trusted. People trust physiotherapists. We deal with some of the most intimate, personal aspects of people’s lives – from death and dying, to personal bodily dysfunction and the heartache of suffering, and act as a constant companion in times of strife. 4. Are experienced. One of the greatest assets physiotherapists have is their access to the public health system. Working with people who have had strokes, or live with COPD, chronic low back pain or

depression helps when it comes to treating the elite athlete, the child with cerebral palsy or the post-op patient. Experiencing the rich tapestry of life gives physiotherapists enormous advantages over many other healthcare professions. 5. Work with people, not just bodies. All good physiotherapists know that it’s not enough to treat the body-as-machine, or to look no further than anatomy, physiology and pathology when treating people. To know people as social beings and the ways that our feelings, thoughts and emotions affect how we feel makes the difference between being technicians and practitioners. And physiotherapists are fabulous practitioners. 6. Are inclusive. Physiotherapists have worked in teams and been dependent on the help of others from the outset. They are good at knowing their limits and not stepping on others’ toes. They’re often seen as pragmatic, enthusiastic and motivated people who like to get things done. As they have shown for many years that we make great allies. Physiotherapy is the treatment of injury, disease and disorders through physical methods — such as exercise, massage, manipulation and other treatments — over medication and surgery. Many people may be of the opinion that physiotherapists mainly work with back and sports related injuries, but they would be very mistaken. Physiotherapists are highly trained health professionals who provide treatment for people suffering from physical problems arising from injury, disease, illness and aging. Their aim is to improve a person’s quality of life by using a variety of treatments to alleviate pain and restore function or, in the case of permanent injury or disease, to lessen the effects of any dysfunction. At Craven SPORT services, we use a wide range of drug-free techniques to relieve pain, restore function and movement, and prevent further problems. Therapy techniques may include: • Joint mobilization and manipulation • Therapeutic exercise prescription and programming • Modalities • Acupuncture PHYSIOTHERAPY AT CRAVEN

“Like any new mom, I wanted to try get my body back to where I had it before kids. After having my first son via emergency C-section, I wanted my body back so bad. It’s not easy once you have gone under the knife, so I enrolled in boot camp. After about 10 sessions, I wasn’t noticing anything nor feeling better, and I wasn’t getting much help from the instructor, other than “keep doing it, you will see results soon”. I stopped attending and started googling exercises related to post C-sections and found information about abdominal separation saying that doing planks or crunches would make it worse! What was I doing in boot camp? I noticed there was really no proper information on how to take care of your body after a C-section, not even my doctor had the information other than doing moderate exercise at your own pace. So, after I had my second son who also came via emergency C-section, I was more cautious of what exercises I would do. But having no core strength, chasing my two-year-old around and raising a baby, I needed help. That’s when I stumbled across a Facebook post that a friend shared about pelvic floor exercises by Bree. I messaged them to see if they could help, and in October I booked an appointment to see Bree. From there we determined that I did have abdominal separation. We started an exercise plan to help strengthen my pelvic floor, which helped the lower abs. Then I was introduced to Ainsley, who started a physio program with me to help close my separation and strengthen my body so I could take care of my boys. Today I have closed my gap, I have a stronger core, less back pain, better balance and have lost some weight. Ainsley really listens and helps make a program that you can do. She modifies the movements to your needs then adds on to it and progresses you at your own speed. Even if you don’t have all the fancy equipment, they will help you in any way they can!” - Jolisa H. HEALTH & WELLNESS TIPS FOR THE SPRING 3 Natural Ways To Beat Spring Allergies

1. Limit your time outdoors. Each spring, trees release billions of tiny pollen grains into the air. When you breathe them into your nose and lungs, they can trigger an allergic reaction. Staying inside can help, especially on windy days and during the early morning hours, when pollen counts are highest. 2. Get natural relief. Some herbal remedies may help stave off allergy symptoms. More research is needed, but an extract from a shrub called butterbur shows promise. Biminne, a Chinese herbal formula with ingredients like ginkgo biloba and Chinese skullcap, may also help. One study found that people who took biminne five times a day for 12 weeks still felt the benefits a year later.

3. Tweak your home. Simple changes make a difference. Shut all windows to keep out pollen. Use an air conditioner to cool your home instead of a fan, which draws in air from outside. Take off your shoes at the door and ask guests to do the same. That keeps allergens outside. Finally, don’t smoke. It can make allergy symptoms worse. If you or someone you live with smokes, now is a good time to quit. If you start smoking again, start over.
