The judges responded to structures that created a better consumer experience, packages that used paper- board in unexpected applications, and designs that solved familiar problems in smarter ways. They were particular- ly enthusiastic when an innovation was both surprising and practical; something that looked complex at first but proved straightforward once they understood it. The discussion also turned toward the growing impor- tance of visual appeal, brand experience, and a carton’s ability to capture attention. Judges talked about packages that were satisfying to open, elevated the product inside, or made them stop and take another look. Sustainability As Part Of The Story Several entries were connected to products with strong eco-friendly stories. Still, the judges made an important distinction: a sustainable product does not automatically make the packaging itself award-worthy for sustainability. The strongest cases were those in which the carton created a measurable improvement: eliminating another packaging component, replacing a different substrate, reducing material use, improving shipping efficiency, or enabling paperboard to enter an application traditionally served by another format. The panel also considered shipping and fulfillment. They looked beyond the carton as an object and consid- ered how it would function throughout the supply chain. A package could be visually striking, but if it created un- necessary material, difficult logistics, or an inefficient pack- out, those realities became part of the conversation.
