WAYS TO STAY GRATEFUL THANKFUL AND THRIVING
As the air turns crisp, fall brings a welcome natural shift in the year. For us parents with children in school, the upheaval of starting back has settled into a familiar routine. Ideally, November calls us to reflect on what we’re thankful for. But all too often for me, it’s my last gasp of air before I’m thrown headlong down the steep hill of uncontrollable holiday activity. I’m trying to slow down the roller coaster of life with gratitude. I’ve noticed that gratitude isn’t limited to Thanksgiving. Harvard Medical School wrote a web article called “Giving Thanks Can Make You Happier.” In it, these esteemed physicians tell us, “Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.” What’s not to like? Study after study tells us gratitude is not an event — it’s a practice, a habit. So, here are seven ways to make gratitude part of your life and help you thrive. It really is the little things. Count your blessings — all of them. Find joy in little things, and nothing is too little or too personal. If you’re thankful for it, savor it. Pray about it, remind yourself of it, and enjoy it. Start a gratitude journal. Studies show that writing down what you’re grateful for can improve your mood and increase your overall happiness. A gratitude journal helps you focus on blessings, no matter how small. Every day, take the time to jot down things you’re thankful for.
Be present. In the hustle of life, it’s easy to overlook the little things that bring us joy. Being fully present in the moment helps us appreciate moments of comfort and joy, big and small. Share. This one is ever-present in the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Research shows acts of kindness benefit both the recipient and the giver. One of the most fulfilling ways to feel thankful is by giving back. Helping others builds community and reminds us of our own blessings. It doesn’t matter how you do it, just do it: volunteer, donate money or goods, or help a neighbor. Express your gratitude for others. This can boost your mood and strengthen relationships. A heartfelt thank-you note, a compliment, or just telling someone you’re grateful for who they are can have a big impact. Take a walk and look around. Studies show that time spent outdoors appreciating the natural world can increase awe, reduce stress, and boost gratitude. Fall offers plenty of wonder, with leaves turning and brisk air. Step outside and soak in the creation around you. Here’s what I’m thankful for right now. It’s YOU who took the time to read my little article. From Knee Injury to $36K Settlement After Workers’ Comp Battle A TEACHER’S JOURNEY
I had the privilege of helping a veteran teacher, Becky from South Carolina, finally get the workers’ compensation insurance company to pay attention to her case after being ignored for nearly two years. Becky was injured while working at a school when she tripped over a computer cord and slammed her left knee into the floor. The accident resulted in a knee fracture and a torn medial meniscus. Although the fracture healed relatively easily with a steroid shot, the torn meniscus was a bigger issue. Becky needed surgery to repair it, but even after the procedure, she suffered from severe pain. Her surgeon ordered two months of knee viscosupplementation shots to help lubricate the joint. Workers’ comp covered all her medical treatment, but when it came time to settle the case for the permanent damage to her knee, the insurance company disappeared. When Becky hired me, she had been waiting almost two years after finishing treatment with no resolution in sight. We got right to work, gathering her medical records, and coordinating with her surgeon, who agreed to fill out a crucial form, the workers’ comp 14B. This form, which is often key to moving a case forward, outlined her impairment rating, restrictions, and future medical needs. When the insurance company saw I was involved, they hired a defense lawyer and started paying attention. After gathering all the evidence and input from Becky about how the injury affected her
daily life and work, I sent a demand letter with a settlement offer and justification for it. We successfully settled her case for $36,000. Ingredients

Dressing • 1/4 cup tahini •
• 1/2 cup green lentils, rinsed clean • 1 cup vegetable stock (or water) • 3 medium leeks, chopped • 1 medium beet, quartered • 1–2 tbsp olive oil • 1/4 tsp each salt and pepper • 4 big handfuls of spinach

• 2 tbsp maple syrup • 3–4 tbsp olive oil • 1 pinch each salt and pepper

2. To a small saucepan over medium-high heat, add lentils and stock and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 20–30 minutes uncovered until all liquid is absorbed. Set aside. 3. Add leeks and beets to the baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil, and season with salt and pepper. Bake 15–20 minutes. For crispier beets, bake for an additional 10–15 minutes. Set aside. 4. In a small bowl, whisk all dressing ingredients until combined. 5. In a larger serving bowl, combine spinach, beets, leeks, and lentils. Add dressing and toss to coat.

and military sexual trauma since 2011. The free program strives to better the lives of veterans through special canine bonds and ultimately end veteran suicide, which claims the lives of roughly 20 veterans every day. When Bill returned from deployment, he had to recover from two surgeries and realized he had PTSD. He had developed severe alcoholism, drinking every day nonstop as his only coping mechanism. In a hopeless place, the Marine felt like he was losing every piece of his identity and had nothing left. After seeing a friend at the VA bring in his service dog, he noticed a remarkable change in him and decided to apply for the program. Bill felt an instant connection to the goofy rescue dog Link, who was recovering from his own trauma after living a rough life in a kill shelter. Bill said his canine companion is his
24/7 therapist, providing him with support and safety at all hours. Link doesn’t just impact Bill’s life; he makes a difference with everyone he encounters, from Bill’s children to the youth athletes he coaches. “Together, we kind of make each other whole,” Bill said. “He makes everyone’s world better, and he makes it seem effortless.” Link has inspired Bill to help others and spread a message of awareness that asking for help is not a sign of weakness but a symbol of strength. Bill has since earned his master’s in social work and provides mental health services with his tail-wagging companion by his side for every session. Together, the pair are showing veterans everywhere that there is hope and that life can get better with a little help from a four-legged friend.
