OCTOBER 2025

GATHERING AT THE GOODMAN TABLE Our Family’s Recipe for Connection Every celebration in my family has always had food at its center. It’s not just about delicious treats, though I love our traditions of homemade ice cream and Mexican food feasts; it’s a way to connect, check in, and hear about each other’s lives. October is Eat Better, Eat Together Month, and whether it’s a Sunday gathering or a big holiday meal, coming together at the dinner table is one of the best ways we stay close. It’s where we laugh, share stories, and even just be together without any distractions for a while. You walk away from that feeling full in every way that matters most. Growing up, I was raised on family meals. It feels like everything worth celebrating, from Thanksgiving and Christmas to birthday parties, includes good food. With how busy life can get, finding the time to be together and recognize the wins, big and small, with your loved ones is essential. It’s not always easy, but I love the aspect of gathering together, sharing your goals, talking about your interests, and getting to know each other better. The table, with plates full of food made with love, is a great place to be together. It’s still a tradition for us today to have regular meals as a family. As a kid, we were always big on Sunday dinners. That was when you set the table, put out the nicer plates, and everyone had their chores to do. It just continued into adulthood, and everyone gets the invite. We usually go over to family members’ dinners a couple of times a month for a feast. Just recently, we had a big celebration for my nephew who’s going on a mission trip to Mexico, and he wanted to enjoy classic Mexican dishes. Mexican food is a Goodman tradition; there’s nothing better. We even enjoy it for major holidays where other dishes tend to take center stage. When it’s the Goodmans’ year to take care of the Thanksgiving meal, we do the traditional turkey, potatoes, and

stuffing, but we don’t skimp on our favorite Mexican recipes. Ground beef tacos with fried corn tortillas and all the fixings are my go-to. Our homemade green corn tamales were always a holiday staple, but those were my dad’s specialty. Even though no one makes them like he did, I remember them fondly. My mom still makes some of the best red enchiladas I’ve ever had, and we always have the full spread of rice, beans, chips, and salsa. Another big Goodman tradition for us is homemade ice cream. It’s easier than you may think. We have an ice cream maker, and you add all your main ingredients, whatever flavor you want, ice, and plenty of salt to help get it to the right consistency. I usually go for cookies and cream with Oreos, but my favorite growing up was banana nut. That’s what my grandma always used to make, and I haven’t found anyone who can duplicate it. My whole family gets in on the fun, and my children love to hear the ice cream maker going. So, whether it’s a big holiday feast or another ordinary Sunday, gathering around the table makes everything feel a little more special. Food brings us together, but the connection, conversation, and laughter feed us most of all.

MEANINGFUL WAYS TO CONNECT WITH YOUR GRANDKIDS Create Memories That Last

There’s something very special about the grandchild- grandparent relationship. While parents often must play the role of disciplinarian, grandparents get to spoil and pamper the grandchildren. Most grandparents want this relationship to be as strong as possible, but it’s easier said than done, especially if you only see your grandkids a few times each year. Here are three strategies you can implement to strengthen your relationship with your grandchildren and allow you to make lasting memories for the rest of their lives. Take advantage of holidays. The holiday season is a time for families to get together, participate in time-honored traditions, and share their love for one another. Make sure you set aside time for your grandkids. Show them your favorite holiday

how your grandchildren react. If they enjoy them, do it again next year! Prioritize outings over gifts. Imagine the best trip, vacation, or family outing you had as a kid. You probably can’t remember a specific gift you received as a kid, but those memories of trips to the zoo, beach, or mall have remained strong. Instead of spending money on gifts, consider taking your grandchildren out for an afternoon together. Do what they want to do. Your grandchildren will only get so much enjoyment participating in your favorite activities or regular

routine, so figure out what they like and participate in those activities with them. They’ll never forget the day they saw

grandma ride in a go-kart, grandpa win the big prize at the arcade, or their grandparents adding the finishing touches to an art masterpiece!

movies, encourage them to help cook a few dishes, and involve them in your traditions and activities. Pay attention to
