Happy Mother’s Day! CELEBRATING THE HARD WORK AND DEDICATION
On the second Sunday in May, families across the country will take some time to celebrate the mothers in their families. For many of us, our mothers were incredibly selfless and served as an inspiration throughout our childhoods. I know my mom played a huge role in shaping me. She taught me that family is the joy of life. Through her strength and fortitude, my mom exemplified so many amazing qualities. She’s always been a strong leader without being forceful. In a way, she demanded respect without explicitly commanding it. It was simply the way she carried herself. My mom recently had foot surgery. She was unable to walk, so my grandmother and I came to visit to make sure she was fully taken care of. While there, I fell ill and woke up one night with a fever. My mom didn’t let her inability to walk stop her from checking on me. She crawled out of her room, wet a washcloth, and placed it on my forehead. If that’s not the epitome of a mother’s love, I’m not sure what is. My mom is also a fantastic example for daughters everywhere. When my grandma’s health was declining, my mom made sure she cared for her just like my grandma cared for my mom when she was young. She was there daily and always made sure my grandma had everything she needed. To this day, my mom is still the central pillar of our family. My brother and I live on opposite sides of the state but still choose to visit our parents for holidays. We’ll even vacation together on occasion. My husband absolutely loves her and our family as a whole. There is no stereotypical mother-in-law relationship here. We always invite her to our events and want her to be part of every experience because we love her.
Mothers, in general, are truly the unsung heroes of the world. We do a lot for our families. For me personally, I’ll work hard all day then come home and cook dinner before helping the kids with their homework or whatever else they need. I’m able to appreciate each of these moments because family is one of the great joys of life. I saw how much my mom had to sacrifice throughout my childhood, but it wasn’t for nothing. Who my mom was during my childhood shaped me into who I am today. Who I am today will help shape my kids in the future. It’s part of the beauty of life and motherhood, but it’s also a large part of the human experience. Sometimes it can be a struggle and maybe dinner got burnt or you had to stay late at work, but even in the
midst of challenges, you can take a step back and appreciate the experience.
Who we are to our kids shapes them into who they’re going to be. You don’t necessarily have to be a mother to make an impact, either. I have an aunt who has no children herself but still made a huge impact on my life. We all have opportunities
to leave a positive impact on someone else and encourage them to reach their full potential. It helps us and improves our community in nearly every aspect.

Is Ordering Takeout Wrecking Your Finances?
Statistically speaking, as a U.S. adult, it’s likely that you eat at restaurants five times a week or more, but even if it’s cheap fast food, it might be doing more damage to your personal finances than you think. Data from the U.S. Department of Labor shows that the average American dines out 5.9 times per week and spends about $3,500 on eating out every year. To put it into another perspective, if you spent $15 per meal five times a week, that’s about $300 over four weeks. It’s worth asking yourself if spending hundreds of dollars every four weeks on cafes and restaurants is getting in the way of your financial goals. If not, great! But if you’re worried, then it’s time to ask yourself what you’re craving.
Whether you need a break, a window of time to socialize, or want to enjoy the thrill of a good deal, there are definitely ways to meet these needs in a budget- friendly way. Try doing the following: • Put together a treat at home that you adore. There are a lot of ways to brew high-quality coffee at home the way you love it — and at a price you adore even more. • Meet family, friends, and coworkers at a park or for a potluck. • Set up weekly or monthly meal staples. Think now and you won’t have to later. It’s time to go recipe hunting! • Consider if the total bill amount will fit in your budget, even if you have coupons or other discounts. • Always have fast, lazy meal options when the need strikes. There are even healthy options in the frozen food aisles these days! You can also re-prioritize your spending, such as choosing to spend on restaurants while out with friends but not ordering food while at home alone. Even though we all love supporting our local restaurants, don’t forget to look out for your own future, too!
Many U.S. adults buy restaurant food for a number of reasons, including:
• • • • •
A treat to get you through your commute or workday Quality time with family, friends, or coworkers
Outsourced meal-planning
Save money with a restaurant discount or offer A helpful option when convenience is needed
Emotionally Handling a Loved One’s Dementia Diagnosis
For the past couple of months, we’ve discussed situations you may have to handle if your loved one has been diagnosed with or started to show symptoms of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. While it’s incredibly important to understand how power of attorney works and figure out how to manage many new responsibilities, there’s also an emotional component. It can be very difficult to care for a loved one suffering from one of these illnesses, but it is possible to make the situation easier on yourself. After a loved one has been diagnosed, you should make an effort to learn all you can about the disease. They will go through some personality changes that can make things challenging if you’re not prepared or aware. It’s going to be a difficult time for everyone involved, but if you know what to expect, you’ll be better able to handle any situation.
Additionally, you should not let anything your loved one does erase the good memories from your past. It may be difficult to talk to them and there may be times they don’t recognize you, but that does not change who they were in the past. Hold on to the good memories and reflect on them when things become difficult. There may come a time when you need an extra layer of support while caring for a loved one with dementia, and that’s okay. You can find support groups designed to help people through this difficult time. Other people have gone through the exact same situation and are available to help you handle it. In our area, the Alzheimer’s Association California Central Coast Chapter is just one group that hosts support groups and provides additional information related to dementia.
why you’re grieving. You may even reach a point where you need to take care of yourself and spend time away from your loved one to recompose yourself. You’re allowed to take time to process the situation and any grief you’re feeling. Through support groups and an understanding of the disease, you’ll be better prepared to help your loved one with whatever they need.
Throughout this process, you are going to feel grief. Take some time to process and understand

This past February, we were delighted to bring Evan C. Page aboard our team as our newest attorney. In just a few short months, Evan has proved himself to be a valuable source of information as he possesses a wealth of knowledge regarding many aspects of estate planning. Evan grew up in Redlands, California, and attended Redlands High School before heading to the University of California, Riverside, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics. He grew up in a family that wanted nothing more than to help others. His mother was a teacher, his father was a deputy district attorney in San Bernardino, and his younger sister is a special education teacher in Northern California. Evan knew he wanted to follow in the family’s footsteps and pursue a career where he could help others. After graduating from UC Riverside, Evan and his then-fiancée (now wife) wanted to do something new and decided to move to Chicago, where he attended the Loyola University Chicago School of Law. He earned his Juris Doctor and returned to Southern California after graduating. He took a job at an estate planning firm and quickly fell in love with the industry. For the past 10 years, Evan has dedicated himself to helping others with their estate plans. He enjoys meeting with clients, figuring out what their apparent and hidden concerns are, and helping them so they can leave the meeting with a weight lifted off their shoulders. He knows every client’s needs and concerns are unique and makes an effort to reflect these needs in their estate plans. People worry about their future and if their wishes will be carried out — Evan always strives to provide them with peace of mind. Evan is a certified specialist in estate planning, probate, and trust administration. When he’s not helping people at work, you can usually find him spending time with his wife and two sons. They love to hike, golf, and catch the occasional Dodger game. Next time you’re in the office, make sure you say hi to Evan!

PADDLE YOUR WAY TO BETTER HEALTH Big Benefits of Canoeing and Kayaking
Mental Benefits •
The weather is getting warmer, which means you can do more activities in the water. Canoeing or kayaking is an excellent way to get outdoors and be active. Besides looking at the beautiful scenery around you, taking to the water confers several physical and mental health benefits.
While canoeing or kayaking, your body releases serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins from neurotransmitters. This will help boost your mood and self-confidence and improve your focus . • These activities can enhance your memory and learning ability . This is because it exercises your hippocampus, one of the largest portions of your brain that is responsible for verbal memory and learning. • If you have trouble sleeping, this activity can improve your sleep . Exercising during the day can make you naturally tired, which helps you fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night. • Since you’ll be in the sun, your body can produce more vitamin D . This vitamin is essential for strong bones and an effective immune system. Canoeing and kayaking are great outdoor activities to help you get your daily dose of physical activity and a mental health boost. So, enjoy the warm weather and be one with nature — this may be your new favorite summer hobby this year!
Physical Benefits •
Paddling can help improve your upper-body strength and muscle tone — because you’re using your arms to guide yourself through the water with the paddle. Paddling helps strengthen your arms, shoulders, chest, and back. • You use your legs to balance, maneuver, and change directions in the vessel. In turn, this movement helps strengthen your lower-body muscles . • While trying to stay centered and balanced on the water, you will develop more core strength . Paddling helps work your lower back, abs, and oblique muscles. • It’s a form of cardiac exercise that will help your heart circulate more blood throughout your body. It will also improve your endurance , enabling you to go longer distances faster.
