Alpha Nu Participates in Democratic Process From Dudley Hall to the Governor's Mansion

One hundred seventy-two brothers made the trip to their Alma Mater to partake in a weekend designed with a key purpose of strengthening fraternal relations within the chapter and fellowship amongst all brothers, new and seasoned. Kicking off the weekend with a golf tournament and happy hour, brothers gathered together to pass the loving cup and fellowship. Day two was for Kappa business; topics included networking, being a Kappa in today’s social climate, brotherhood, and committee reports. Saturday wasn’t all business. Following the formal meeting, brothers were enter- tained at the First National Bank Field Carolina A&T State Univer- sity, brothers from the Alpha Nu Chapter gathered for a

for “Meet Me at the Diamond.” At the field, the brothers took in America’s oldest pastime by attending the local Greens- boro Grasshoppers baseball game. On day three, brothers enjoyed brunch together to wrap up the festivities. Seven years had passed since the Alpha Nu Chapter had a presence on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University, the largest HBCU in the country. That inactivity sparked a need to create an environment to help cultivate a void between generations and set the tone for future brothers for years to come. That environment is the Alpha Nu Retreat. “There had always been talk amongst alumni from the Alpha Nu Chapter to have a retreat,” says brother Justin Neal, one of the architects of the event. He goes on to explain, “Our chapter being in existence for 85 years, over 800 brothers have been initiated. We recog- nized there was a disconnect between the seasoned brothers and the younger

brothers. Uniting all the generations of Alpha Nu, allowed us to combine ideas and resources to strengthen brotherhood, reclamation, and advancement of the fraternity’s initiatives.” Now in its third year, the retreat has made great strides towards its goal. Since its inception, the retreat has served as a springboard for reclamation, boasting a strong 38% increase in financially active status amongst brothers over a two-year span, and a 15% increase year-over-year. The chapter has already been recognized twice as National Reclamation Chapter of the Month by the Grand Chapter. In addition to those numbers, the chapter has also accumulated 11 new Life Member- ships across six different lines. Not one to rest on laurels, the brothers have set their eyes on achieving a stretch goal given by the National Reclamation Chairman of 75% active-living member- ship.
