Charles Brockett 1922–2018 Past Province Polemarch, Educator, U.S. Army

Alumni Chapter including serving as its Polemarch. In 1986, the 25 th Grand Polemarch Randall C. Bacon appointed Brockett as the 17 th polemarch of the Eastern Province of Kappa Alpha Psi ® which he led until 1988. He was also the proud recipient of numerous honors and awards at the local, state, and na- tional levels. Brother Brockett was preceded in death by his sisters: Mary Alice Brockett Clemmons and Olivia Brockett; his brothers: Forrest Brockett and Tommie Brockett; and niece Melissa Brockett Hasberry. He is survived by his wife, Annette L. Brockett; his son, Troy C. Brockett (Annapolis (MD) Alumni 1998); his grandchildren: Jackson M. (Sydney), Tyler Gwynne, Christopher J. Brockett; his brother, Garland Mosley (Sharon); and a host of close relatives, friends, former students and colleagues. The Honorable Benjamin H. a graduate of Ohio Northern University where he majored in accounting and his- tory. He briefly worked as an accountant prior to returning to his alma mater’s law school where he earned a J.D. degree in 1972. He moved to Michigan where he would spend the remainder of his life. He worked briefly for Legal Aid of Grand Rapids prior to practicing per- sonal injury, civil rights, and criminal law as a senior partner at the firm Logan and Beason. He was a Michigan Civil Rights referee from 1984 to 1988. He also founded the Floyd Skinner Bar Associa- tion. In 1988, he was elected to judge for the 61 st District Count via write-in votes and was reelected twice. His election in 1988 to the District Court bench was a first for African Americans in Western Michigan. Logan’s profile is included in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Black America, Black Judges in America, Who’s Who in Politics, and Who’s Who in American Law Enforcement Leaders. Among many other awards, he has re- ceived recognition from his high school, the municipalities of Dayton, Kansas City, Pontiac, Muskegon Heights, the NAACP of Grand Rapids and the na- tional NAACP, and from the Augustus D. Straker Bar. Judge Logan was a long-time member of the National Bar Association (NBA). He chaired the NBA’s Judicial Council from 1994-1995. The NBA inducted Logan into its Hall of Fame in 2013. He participated in many charitable organiza- tions including the Kappa Alpha Psi ® Foundation. Brother Benjamin H. Logan II is sur- vived by his mother Jeanne Logan, his wife; Denice; one daughter, four sons, 11 grandchildren, one great grandchild; one brother, and a host of other rela- tives, friends, and constituents.

December 7, 2018. A native of Prin- cess County (now Virginia Beach), VA, he was born on January 24, 1937, to the late Gideon Brockett and Allean Hider Brockett Mosley. He was a product of the Princess Anne County, VA Public School Division, graduating from the Princess Anne County Training School with honors. He earned a B.S. degree in science from historic Virginia State College (now University) in Petersburg, VA and a M.S. degree in educational administration and supervision from Old Dominion University. He pursued addi- tional graduate studies at the University of Virginia, the European Division of the University of Maryland, and Norfolk State University. After honorably discharged from the United States Army, Brockett began work in 1963 within the Norfolk City Public School System. He rose through the ranks in a series of positions in the school district. His 38-year career included positions as a teacher, an assis- tant principal, and an acting principal at Booker T. Washington High School. In addition, he held assistant principalships at Granby, Lake Taylor, and Norview High Schools respectively. He was also an entrepreneur who was involved in several business pursuits. Brockett was active in various civic, fraternal, and professional organizations. A longtime member of the Norfolk (VA)

Judge Benjamin H. Logan II (Grand Rapids (MI) Alumni 1979) entered the Chapter Invisible on September 24, 2018

at the age of 75. Logan served on the Grand Rapids District court for nearly three decades. He held a reputation as a judge who served tough sentencing to defendants especially individuals that were repeated offenders. Logan was known for his activism in the Grand Rapids community. A former colleague and mentee of Logan said a “He gave all of himself. Judge Logan spent a lot of time and money trying to make Grand Rapids a better place.”
