England, and the Dayton Art Institute. In 1949 Johns was hired as the Assistant Bursar at Central State College (now University). In 1951, he was promoted to the position of uni- versity controller. He was promoted to Business Manager of Central State University in 1955, and in 1959, he became the Vice President of Fiscal Affairs and the Director of Physical and Future Planning. Johns later served as Dean of the Col- lege of Business at Central State University from 1972 until 1977. Johns left Central State to start an educational management consultancy service. A member of the Wilberforce (OH) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi , Johns also held mem- berships in the Xenia (OH) Chamber of Com- merce, Tecumseh Boy Scout Council, Zeta Sigma Pi Honor Fraternity, Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, and Administrative Council for Central State University. He was a founding board mem- ber of the Central State University federal credit union. In early 1960s, Johns served as the East Central Province Keeper of Records and Keeper of Exchequer. In 1970, he became a member of Xenia Rotary Club and served as the club's first Black president in 1974. Johns was on the cover of the May 1962 issue of the Kappa Alpha Psi ® Journal. Inside this issue was a feature article entitled “Harry G. Johns Day” which highlighted Johns and the city of Alliance, OH honoring Johns by designating April 14, 1962 as “Harry G. Johns Day.” Other achievements include Central State University bestowing him with an honorary doctorate in humane letters and U.S. Army honoring him with the Eastern Service Medal with four Bronze Stars for his distinguished service during World War II. Johns received the Central State University College of Business Administration Alumnus Award, the Xenia Area Chamber of Commerce Award and the PAL of the Year Award. Central State University's Dr. Harry G. Johns Scholarship is named is his honor. The Harry G. Johns Living Learning Center resides on the campus of Central State University. In addition to his parents, Brother Harry Johns was preceded in death by his first wife, Garnetta F. Johns, brothers, Haywood B. Johns, Colonel James J. Johns (Delta 1941), Roland H. (Loertta) Johns, sisters, Lena M. (Everette) O'Neal, Jessie Woods, and Anna (Bill) Williams. He and his beloved and extraordinarily devoted wife of fifty-three years, Bessie (Cason) Johns, had four sons, Colonel Kevin E. Johns (USMC, Retired), Richard J. Johns, Harry G. (Carla) Johns II, David M. Johns and a grandson, Anthony G. Johns.
