(Carmen) Fitch III, and a host of relatives, friends and colleagues. James L. Forbes, Sr. 1925–2018 Baton Rouge, LA Educator, U.S. Navy A was born in Mound City, IL on April 4, 1925. After high school graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in 1946. He graduated from Southern University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education and counseling. Forbes taught mathematics for 41 years at Northwestern High School in Zach- ary, LA and Glen Oaks Middle School in Baton Rouge both as a teacher and counselor. Forbes was a Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi ® and a member of the Baton Rouge (LA) Alumni Chapter. He was also an active member of the South- ern University Quarterback Club. Brother James Forbes, Sr. was pre- ceded in death by his parents Cleve- land Forbes, Sr and Beatrice Carter Forbes, and siblings Almena English, Sarah Johnson, Violet Marie King, Mary Ella Forbes, Cleveland Forbes, Jr and Abner Eugene Forbes. on February 21, 1934 in Chicago, IL, Harden was a graduate of Englewood High School. He attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA graduat- ing in 1956 with a B.S. degree in sec- ondary education. While at Southern, he played both football and baseball. He excelled academically, was involved in many campus activities. He later earned advanced degrees with a Master of Edu- cation from Loyola University-Chicago and a Doctorate in Education from Nova Southeastern University. In 1956, he began his teaching career with the Chicago Public School System (CPS) prior to serving in the United States Army. After an honor- able discharge in 1959, he returned to the CPS Board of Education where he taught and coached basketball, football, and golf for eleven years at Harrison High School prior to becoming a League Supervisor in 1970. In 1972 he became an Area Supervisor at the Board Central Office. In 1976, Harden became the Director of Health, Physical Education and Safety for CPS, becoming the first African American appointed to this posi- tion in the city of Chicago. Haynes grew up in Carson, MS and graduated from Bassfield High School prior to attending Alcorn State Univer- sity where he earned Bachelor of Sci- ence degree in Recreation and Physical Education. He subsequently earned advanced degrees; master’s degree from the University of Georgia, specialist degree from Mississippi College, and a PhD from Mississippi State University. Haynes enjoyed a long professional career in education. His first position was a physical education teacher in Pinola, MS. When he retired in 2014, he had served as a teacher, principal, Director of Transportation, Assistant and Deputy Superintendent for Jackson (MS) Public Schools, Superintendent
