MISSIONS
A Well Called Rehoboth b y A r t h u r M o u w Q uite frequently young people come to us missionaries and ask where the greatest need is,
marry for they are not their own. Yet in this land, I wonder some times why we who are Christians, who are not our own, want to choose for ourselves or have some one choose for us rather than let God direct us where we should serve Him. Today the harvest truly is plenteous but the laborers are few. And no one can choose your place of labor for you but God. Un less you let Him direct your fife and go where He wants you to go, some day when you meet Him, the blood of those whom you should have reached will be upon your hands. In Genesis 26 there is a wonder ful story about Isaac that I can’t get away from. There was a fam ine in the land of Gerar and Isaac wanted to go down to the land of Egypt, but the Lord said, “ Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of.” And then the Lord said, “ Sojourn in this land . . .” which happened to be the land of Gerar. The Lord told him to dwell in a land that He would tell him of, but in the mean time, “ Sojourn in this land.” The reason God said that, I be lieve, is because Isaac wanted to remain in Gerar for we read in the sixth verse that instead of sojourn ing, he dwelt in the land of Gerar, putting his roots down in Gerar. He wasn’t in the land the Lord wanted him to be in at all and immediately he ran into trouble. He lied about his wife saying, “ She is my sister,” and you know the rest of the story. But yet in this land as he sowed, the Lord gave him an h u n d red fo ld . He had herdsmen, he had sheep, he had goats, he had servants and he had wealth— so much so that the peo ple of that land envied him and finally Abimelech said to him: “ Go from us; for thou art much might ier than we.” Sheep and goats, cat tle and all of that, might mean blessing from the Lord but it is no sign of God’s presence. and, “Where should I go?” They want us to give them direction and they want us to tell them. But there is no missionary who can tell an other where he or she should go. On the other hand, not once has a young woman come to me and asked, “Whom do you think I should marry?” Of course not. In this, they want to choose for them selves. But when it comes to going to a foreign field, they are not so sure. They don’t know just where they should go. Actually, there isn’t any person who can choose the field to which you should go. Yet there is one who can direct you and that one is the Holy Spirit of God. Jesus Christ said, “ It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you. . . . Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth. . . .” If you want to know where you are supposed to go, let the Holy Spirit of God take possession of your life. Yield yourself completely to Him and learn experimentally what it means to present your bodies a liv ing sacrifice—not a dead sacrifice but a living sacrifice unto God and say, “ Lord, here I am; possess me by your Holy Spirit; send me, Lord, wherever you want me to go-” No sacrifice is too great. Remem ber that after we come to know the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord, we are no longer our own for we are bought with a price. In China and in India, young people cannot choose the one they are to About the Author Missionary Arthur Mouw, serving un der the Christian & Missionary Alliance, has worked for 25 years in Borneo. Though at present on furlough in the U.S., he plans to return to this field where he has already helped to establish some 20 churches.
