U.S. WOMEN’S OLYMPIC TEAM 2020 RESULTS
TOKYO, JAPAN • JULY 23-AUGUST 8, 2021
USA Basketball put together a program ahead of the 2020 Olympics that gave athletes and coaches an opportunity to train at camps and competitions from September 2019 through April 2020. After posting a 17-1 mark against national and international competition, plans were halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the delay, the 2020 U.S. Olympic Women’s Basketball Team traveled to Tokyo and claimed a seventh-straight gold medal, a streak accomplished just once before by a traditional team sport (U.S. Olympic men’s basketball, 1936-1968). Led by Opening Ceremony flag bearer Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi, both of whom own a record five Olympic basketball gold medals, and four- time Olympic gold medalist Sylvia Fowles, the U.S. swept its competition for a perfect 6-0 mark. Behind A’ja Wilson’s and Brittney Griner’s double-doubles, and the formidable presence of Taurasi and Bird, the U.S. opened with an 81-72 win over Nigeria on July 27. It was the 50th consecutive Olympic victory, a streak that began when the Americans won bronze at the 1992 Barce- lona Olympics. In her Olympic debut, Wilson had 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Griner finished with 13 point and 10 boards. Taurasi had 10 first-half points. Though Bird didn’t score, she had 13 assists and four rebounds. The USA defeated Japan 86-69 on July 30 as Wilson posted her second double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. In a tight contest throughout, the USA held off France for a 93-82 win on Aug. 2. Wilson had 22 points and seven rebounds. The USA took control early with a 17-0 first quarter run and went on to secure a 79-55 win over Australia in the quarterfinals behind 23 points from Breanna Stewart. Griner led the USA with 15 points and 12 rebounds as the USA secured a double-digit lead in the first quarter and was in control throughout a 79-59 win over Serbia in the Olympic semifinals. Meeting Japan again in the gold medal game, Bird scored the first two points and the U.S. never trailed on its way to the 90-75 victory. Griner scored a game-best 30 points, a U.S. Olympic gold medal game record and the second most ever scored by a U.S. woman at the Olympics. Wilson celebrated her 25th birthday by tallying 19 points, seven rebounds, five assists and a U.S. Olympic women’s single game record five blocks.

USA BASKETBALL HISTORY
U.S. WOMEN’S OLYMPIC TEAM 2016 RESULTS
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL • AUGUST 5-21, 2016
The 2016 U.S. Olympic Women’s Basketball Team captured the USA’s sixth-straight and eighth-overall Olympic gold medal. Led by a trio of four-time Olympic gold medalists, Sue Bird, Tamika Catchings and Diana Taurasi, the team swept its Olympic competition by a margin of victory of 37.2 points and hit the century mark a record six times in eight games. Orchestrated by head coach Geno Auriemma, the USA’s high-octane offense, which produced 102.1 points a game, masked a dominating defensive effort by the red, white and blue. While the USA shot a blistering 57.7% from the field and hauled in 45.2 rebounds a game, its defense held opponents to 37.1% from the field and allowed them just 27.3 boards per contest. Further, the team out 28.0 assists on 40.5 field goals. In addition to veteran co-captains Bird, Catchings and Taurasi, the U.S. squad featured three-time Olympians Seimone Augustus and Sylvia Fowles; two-time Olympians Tina Charles, Angel McCoughtry, Maya Moore and Lindsay Whalen; as well as three young, up-and-coming stars, Elena Delle Donne, Brittney Griner and Breanna Stewart. The USA beat its five preliminary round opponents by 40.2 points per game, beginning with a 121-56 victory over Senegal. The U.S. also defeated 2014 FIBA World Championship silver medalist Spain 103-63, earned a 110-84 victory over 2015 European champion Serbia, took down 2015 Americas champion Canada 81-51 and closed preliminary play with a 105-62 rout of China. Facing 2015 FIBA Asia gold medalist Japan in quarterfinals, the U.S. earned a lopsided 110-64 victory, then triumphed 86-67 over 2012 Olym- pic silver medalist France in the semifinals, before the USA pulled away to earn gold with a 101-72 victory in a rematch against Spain. In seven of the USA’s eight games Taurasi led or shared as the team’s high scorer and finished the tournament averaging a team-best 15.6 points, while also dishing out 3.3 assists and shooting 57.9% from beyond the arc.

USA BASKETBALL HISTORY
USA WOMEN’S OLYMPIC TEAM 2012 RESULTS
LONDON, ENGLAND • JULY 28-AUGUST 11, 2012
The U.S. entered the 2012 London Olympics as four-time defending champions, something no other women’s traditional team sport had done in the history of the Games. Led by tri-captains and three-time Olympic gold medalists Sue Bird, Tamika Catchings and Diana Taurasi, the U.S. left no doubt in anyone’s mind that it was the best team in the tournament as it moved its fifth-straight Olympic title. In going 8-0, the USA’s Olympic winning streak, which dates to the 1992 bronze medal game, improved to 41 games. In scoring an average of 90.6 points and limiting opponents to 56.2 points, the USA’s scoring margin of +34.4 points nearly 30 points better than the next team’s scoring margin. Australia, which claimed the bronze and ranked second in this category, owned a +5.2 scoring margin. In addition to scoring, it was No. 1 in field goal percentage, rebounding, defensive rebounding, blocks, assists and steals. Individually, the well-rounded effort saw 10 players average between 6.0 and 12.4 points a game and every player averaged fewer than 25 minutes a contest. The U.S. won its five preliminary round games by an average of 36.6 points, beginning with an 81-56 victory over Croatia as Tina Charles paced the U.S. with 14 points in her Olympic debut. Candace Parker then posted 14 points to lead the USA to a 90-38 rout of Angola; while Angel McCoughtry shot 10-of-11 from the line and finished with a team-best 18 points as the U.S. defeated Turkey 89-58. The U.S., behind 18 points (4-8 3FG) by Taurasi, erased an early 10-0 deficit and took down the Czech Republic 88-61. Closing preliminary play on Aug. 5. with a 114-66 victory over China, the USA was again led by Taurasi, who scored 22 points. Advancing to the quarterfinals, the U.S. received a team-high 15 points from Taurasi en route to dispatching Canada 91-48. Meeting Australia in the semifinals, the Americans trailed at halftime for the first time since the third game of the 2000 Olympics, but came back and claimed their closest victory of the tournament, 86-73, behind 14 points apiece from Charles and Taurasi. In the gold medal game, the U.S. faced unbeaten France, which was no match for the Americans as they collected an 86-50 and the gold medal behind a 21-point, 11-rebound performance from Parker.
