The Department of Education aims to prepare students for successful careers in teaching, leading, and supervision in elementary and secondary schools. Students gain experience in areas like teaching methods, child development, educational psychology, and fieldwork. All future teachers must complete classroom observation and student teaching in public schools. Due to changes in state laws or university policies, additional requirements may be added to the teacher education programs. ADMISSION TO THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION To join the Department of Education program, students must apply through the Department Chair’s office – usually during their sophomore year while taking Foundations of Education . Students can only take the professional semester after being officially admitted. Transfer students may receive a one-semester permit to take restricted courses if they have at least a 2.50 GPA. Admission Requirements: Students must be approved by the Admission and Retention Committee and meet these requirements: 1. Submit the admission forms and transcript. 2. Have a minimum 2.50 cumulative GPA. 3. Complete an interview with the Teacher Education Admission Committee. 4. Show strong reading, writing, and speaking skills through coursework. 5. Have a 2.75 GPA in general education courses or meet other OSRHE requirements to satisfy GE proficiency. 6. Complete at least 30 semester hours. 7. Earn a grade of C or better in ENGL 1113 and ENGL 1213. 8. Show interest in teaching through past experiences or involvement. 9. Complete EDUC 2113 Foundations of Education (including 30 hours of classroom observation) with at least a C. 10. Complete Gate 1 requirements. 11. Submit a Criminal History Disclosure Statement. 12. Complete a Plan of Study with an advisor.
Students must be formally admitted to take restricted courses like those in the professional semester. If denied, students can reapply after fixing any issues. Appeals must be submitted to the Department Chair, who will present them to the committee. After admission, students must continue meeting all standards. The department checks progress each semester. Students who fall below expectations will receive written notice and may be placed on probation or suspended .
ADMISSION TO THE STUDENT TEACHING
The professional semester includes a 4-week block and a 12-week student teaching experience. To be admitted, teacher candidates must meet all requirements and apply after meeting with the Coordinator of Field Experiences. Steps to Apply: 1. Attend the required Teacher Candidacy and Gate 2 meeting the semester before student teaching. 2. After the meeting, complete the online application. 3. Be a current student in good standing and officially admitted to the Department of Education. 6. Complete at least 75% of your major coursework, including the methods course (for Secondary Education students). 7. Have an overall GPA of at least 2.50. 8. Complete Gate 1 and Gate 2 requirements. 9. Submit three school placement requests, avoiding schools where you have relatives on staff. Locations near the university will be given priority. 10. Meet all placement requirements set by both SWOSU and the cooperating school. 4. Finish the pre-professional education courses. 5. Meet novice foreign language proficiency.
