ELEMENTARY PROGRAMS COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES
ELEMENTARY EDUCATION GOALS
Elementary Education Major (B.S.Ed.)
In addition to the shared goals, graduates of the Elementary Education program will be able to (aligned to CAEP Elementary Standards): 1. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of core subjects (English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies) to effectively teach grades 1–8. 2. Integrate cross-disciplinary approaches to support literacy, numeracy, scientific reasoning, and critical thinking across the curriculum. 3. Use developmentally appropriate strategies to meet the diverse needs of upper elementary and middle-grade learners. 4. Apply assessment literacy to design, implement, and interpret multiple forms of assessment that guide instructional decision-making. 5. Demonstrate leadership and collaboration skills in working with families, colleagues, and communities to support student learning and development. Early Childhood Education Option (B.S.Ed.) In addition to the shared goals, graduates of the Early Childhood Education option will be able to (aligned to NAEYC Professional Standards): 1. Apply knowledge of child development (birth–age 8) to create safe, healthy, respectful, and supportive learning environments. 2. Build strong family and community partnerships that enhance children’s development and learning. 3. Use developmentally appropriate assessment practices to document and support children’s growth across physical, cognitive, language, and socio-emotional domains. 4. Implement effective teaching practices that integrate play, inquiry, creativity, and culturally sustaining pedagogy for young learners. 5. Demonstrate professional identity and advocacy by engaging in ethical practice, reflective decision- making, and commitment to equity and excellence in early childhood education.
Upon completion of the Elementary Education or Early Childhood Education program, candidates will be able to: 1. Apply sound principles of teaching and learning to design effective instruction for diverse learners.
2. Demonstrate broad content knowledge across communications, social sciences, world cultures, scientific discovery, and the creative arts, with an appreciation for cultural and artistic expression. 3. Exhibit humanistic qualities of empathy, flexibility, and respect for individual differences in fostering positive learning environments. 4. Interpret and use data to understand students’ social, emotional, intellectual, and cultural contexts. 5. Utilize current research and trends to create developmentally appropriate learning environments that foster self-discipline and intrinsic motivation. 6. Practice professional ethics and dispositions consistent with the teaching profession.
7. Develop measurable objectives and aligned assessments across curricular areas.
