PROGRAM GOALS The Health Care Administration Program at Southwestern Oklahoma State University has established goals toward which all curriculum and program activities are directed. Program goals are: 1. Encourage students to complete a major in health care administration to gain an introduction to the services and general functioning of health care institutions. 2. Provide a nurturing ground for future healthcare leaders that will possess leadership skills, strategic thinking, and an ethical foundation necessary to lead healthcare organizations such as, but not limited to, hospitals, nursing homes, mental institutions, home health care, rehabilitation centers and governmental health agencies, with integrity and compassion. 3. Offer a long-term care emphasis/specialization that will allow students, upon completion, to be eligible to obtain licensure as a certified Long-Term Care Administrator, Residential Living/Assisted Living Administrator, or Home-Based Care Services Administration in Oklahoma and/or Licensure in other states by applicable regulations. PROGRAMS OF STUDY Major : Health Care Administration Emphasis/Specialization Area (Choose One): “Traditional” or “Long-Term Care**” **The bachelor degree in Health Care Administration – Long- Term Care Specialization is accredited by the National Association of Long-Term Care Administrator Boards (NAB). GENERAL INFORMATION THE PROFESSION The Health Care Administration Major at Southwestern Oklahoma State University is designed for the student who desires a challenging career as an administrator in various health care settings. The Health Care Administration curriculum leads to a Bachelor of Science Degree which offers students a core curriculum comprised of leadership skills, hands-on internship/practicum preparing them as they further their education in one of two specializations, “Traditional Healthcare” or Long-Term Care”. Managing the complex activities of a modern health care facility is a demanding task, which calls for versatile skills of a trained administrator. Accordingly, the curriculum is designed to provide in-depth training with core curriculum to provide students an array of knowledge in health care management, leadership, health care law & ethics, clinical statistical data, health data analysis, health care finance systems, compliance, quality measures, along with business courses. Curriculum in the “emphasis areas” is designed to

provide students’ knowledge that is specific to the area they choose to specialize in. Healthcare Administration – Traditional Emphasis curriculum delves into further aspects of information systems, electronic health records, and multiple business courses that will equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to become successful and ethical professionals and leaders in various business opportunities, healthcare facilities, such as hospitals, mental institutions, home health care, rehabilitation centers and governmental health agencies. Healthcare Administration-Long-Term Care Emphasis/Specialization curriculum delves into the multifaceted aspects of geriatric health and wellness, behavioral psychology, and psychology for healthcare leaders offering students comprehensive understanding of healthcare practices tailored to the elderly population. This will equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to become successful and ethical professionals and leaders, with a particular emphasis on long-term care settings. To obtain a bachelor's degree in Health Care Administration, the student must declare their specific emphasis area and complete the required curriculum with a minimum of 120 semester hours of college credit with an overall grade point of 2.25 and a minimum grade point average of 2.25 in major courses. In addition to the regular coursework, Health Care Administration majors complete an internship/practicum in approved health care facilities. The internship/ practicum is designed according to the "emphasis area” the student has declared, “traditional” or “long-term care”. The purpose of the HCA Internship/Practicum is to provide the vital link between textbook, campus instruction, and on-site experience. HCA -Traditional Emphasis Internship: The purpose of the practicum is to provide students with “real world” experiences in order to prepare them for entry-level professional positions in a variety of organizations. The course is completed on site in a facility/agency for designated period of practical experience devoted to serving an apprenticeship in Health Care Administration. Students will serve under selected administrators in the areas of acute care hospital, long term care, mental health care, home health, governmental health, voluntary health, and health
