research project administration. The internship should be completed during the last semester. HCA Long -Term Care Practicum: The purpose of the practicum is to provide students with “real world” experiences in order to prepare them for entry-level professional positions in a variety of organizations who serve older adults. The course is completed on site in a facility/agency that serves older adults. Students are required to complete the majority of the required 1,000 hours in a licensed nursing home under the supervision of a licensed long-term care preceptor. The remaining hours will be completed in various healthcare settings including skilled nursing units, rehabilitation centers, home health, hospice, residential care, and assisted living under the supervision of licensed preceptor. Students will acquire practical experience under supervision across diverse healthcare settings, prioritizing hands-on engagement over observation. The course places a strong emphasis on analyzing challenges and experiences encountered during the practicum, urging students to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in coursework to real-world scenarios.

The internship should begin upon completion of required coursework. Students should access the internship orientation module through Canvas at the beginning of the semester in which enrolled in the internship course. Following the orientation module, it is the responsibility of the student to identify their potential internship site(s) and make an appointment with the Program Director and/or Practicum Advisor to facilitate the internship/practicum with the facility mentor/preceptor. Once the site has been identified student will submit an internship planning form to the Program Director and/or Practicum Advisor who will contact the facility and provide information on how to establish a formal agreement and relate the requirements of the internship. Internship planning forms should be submitted to the Program Director and/or Practicum Advisor at least 4 weeks in advance of the planned internship dates. Students should be able to show evidence of current health insurance coverage, as well as a current physical examination and immunizations. Background checks and drug screens will also be the responsibility of the student. Orientation programs may also be required by the internship sites selected by the student.
