HIM 3343 CODING II This course provides information on health-related coding systems which are utilized for data retrieval and reimbursement by type of service. ICD- 9-CM coding principles are covered. Data retrieval relating to manual or automated systems are discussed. The course includes two hours of lecture and three hours of lab per week. Online HIM 3363 HEALTHCARE COMPLIANCE AND RISK This course introduces students to risk management and compliance auditing in health information management. Students will analyze performance measures to identify system errors, track adverse events, and report findings to reduce risk. The course emphasizes the design and implementation of audit trails, evaluating organizational preparedness for accreditation surveys, and compiling audit reports aligned with regulatory and accreditation standards. Students will apply project management principles by creating a project charter, budget, schedule, and risk management plan while practicing advanced communication, time management, and virtual collaboration skills. Online HIM 3163 TECHNOLOGY IN HEALTHCARE This course explores the role of artificial intelligence and advanced technologies in healthcare, focusing on their applications, benefits, risks, and ethical considerations. Students will examine current trends in AI and machine learning, identify their use in healthcare operations, and analyze the credibility and reliability of data generated by these technologies. Online HIM 3173 INFORMATION & PROTECTION IN HEALTHCARE This course provides an in-depth study of privacy, security, and confidentiality in health information management. Students will apply federal, state, and local legislation to the collection, use, release, and retention of health information, while examining safeguards such as physical, technical, and administrative controls. The course emphasizes identifying vulnerabilities, investigating breaches, and evaluating policies to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. Students will also address cyber risks, validate legal documents, and recommend strategies to protect patients, organizations, and healthcare data assets. Online HIM 3213 HEALTHCARE LEGAL SYSTEMS This course examines the legal and regulatory environment of health information management with a focus on compliance, policy development, and fraud prevention. Students will apply knowledge of the U.S. legal system, interpret legislation and judicial processes, and identify licensure and accreditation standards that affect HIM practice. The course emphasizes developing and modifying policies to ensure compliance, while also differentiating between fraud and abuse, identifying reporting requirements, and creating documentation integrity metrics. Students will analyze data to detect patterns of fraud or abuse and prepare reports to support compliance, transparency, and ethical practice in healthcare organizations. Online HIM 3223 INTRO TO ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORDS This course is intended for individuals who are interested or involved in electronic health records (EHRs). Provides value to students as they are drawn into the challenges & improvements enabled by EHRs. The EHR is the “bridge to everywhere.” It bridges the diverse roles of many medical specialties and allied healthcare occupations. The EHR must bridge the gap between medical data and decision-making and the limitations of unaided human cognition. The EHR must be a key enabler between growing medical knowledge and daily practice in institutions, clinics, and offices around the USA. Two hours of lecture per week. Online HIM 3333 CODING I This course provides information on CPT coding principles and the outpatient prospective payment system as well as effective management of coding services for both inpatient and outpatient systems. The course includes four hours of lecture and six hours of lab per week for the first eight weeks. Online
