Southwestern Oklahoma State University Undergraduate Catalog 2026-2027
PTA 1063 EXERCISE TECHNIQUES & ASSESSMENT This course prepares students to implement therapeutic exercise interventions as part of a physical therapist's plan of care. Students will apply biomechanical principles to design and progress exercise programs for various patient populations. These programs focus on improving muscle performance, range of motion, and postural stability. Corequisite: PTA 1063L. PTA 1073 FOUNDATIONS OF PT This course introduces the foundational concepts of human function from a physical therapist assistant perspective. Students will learn to identify and describe normal vital signs, posture, range of motion, muscle function, and nerve transmission. The curriculum includes hands-on practice in accurately assessing muscle strength and joint motion. Corequisite: PTA 1073L PTA 1113 THREATS TO BASIC HUMAN NEEDS The student will identify underlying circumstances and phases of disease and dysfunction, perform techniques to prevent secondary disabilities using special equipment as needed. Practical application of these techniques will be practiced in the laboratory. S PTA 1213 PAIN MANAGEMENT I Students will be instructed in the various theories of pain, correctly positioning and draping patients for pain relief and for protection of modesty; heat/cold application, effectively administering massage and lymphapress intermittent pressure, relaxation and postural exercises; applying cervical and lumbar traction; paraffin, hydrotherapy; medical asepsis; and bandaging and dressing. Practical application of these
PTA 2212 PHARMACOLOGY FOR THE PTA This course is designed to provide the physical therapist assistant (PTA) student with foundational knowledge of pharmacology and medication management as it relates to physical therapy practice. The course will cover fundamental principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. PTA 2222 CLINICAL PRACTICUM II This advanced, full-time clinical experience provides students with the opportunity to refine and apply comprehensive physical therapist assistant (PTA) skills in a real-world clinical setting. Supervision is provided by a licensed physical therapist and/or physical therapist assistant clinical instructor. For traditional 2yr PTA program students only. PTA 2233 REHABILITATION SPECIALTIES Explore the essential knowledge and practical skills required for effective physical therapist assistant intervention with pediatric populations. This course focuses specifically on musculoskeletal development and cardiopulmonary health, bridging foundational concepts of typical and atypical growth to advanced, evidence-based intervention techniques for all patient populations, including pediatrics. Corequisite: PTA 2233L PTA 2243 THERAPEUTIC MODALITIES II This course will explore the biophysical principles, indications, and contraindications for applying various therapeutic modalities in physical therapy practice. This course emphasizes the evidence-based application of modalities. Students develop the psychomotor skills and clinical decision-making necessary to safely and effectively implement these interventions as part of a physical therapist's plan of care. Corequisite: PTA 2243L PTA 2253 PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE FOR THE PTA This course prepares students for the administrative and systemic functions of a physical therapy practice. Students explore evaluation, treatment, and administrative assistance roles, and summarize the progression of comprehensive rehabilitation programs. Topics include utilizing administrative records, charging systems, quality assurance, and cost containment measures. The course also provides professional development, including resume writing and an intensive review for state board examinations. PTA 2263 APPLIED PATHOLOGY This course provides a comprehensive examination of human disease and dysfunction within the scope of physical therapy practice. Students will explore the underlying physiological and pathological circumstances that lead to various health conditions and the subsequent phases of disease progression. The curriculum emphasizes the crucial role of the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) in managing patient care to prevent secondary disabilities and maintain a safe working environment. Corequisite: PTA 2263L PTA 2273 CLINICAL PRACTICUM I This course offers initial supervised clinical experience in local healthcare facilities. Students observe and practice fundamental skills of a physical therapist assistant (PTA). This is done under the direct supervision of a licensed physical therapist or physical therapist assistant. The practicum focuses on applying theoretical knowledge, developing patient care competencies, and integrating into the professional healthcare team environment. For traditional 2yr PTA program students only. PTA 2283 CLINICAL PRACTICUM III This is a full-time, terminal clinical experience course that provides students with extensive practical application of physical therapist assistant skills under the direct supervision of a licensed physical therapist or physical therapist assistant. The practicum emphasizes the synthesis of academic knowledge, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication to provide comprehensive patient care. For traditional 2yr PTA program students only.
techniques will be practiced in the laboratory. F PTA 1224 THERAPEUTIC EXERCISES I
Instruction will be given on rehabilitation techniques and neurophysiological approaches to treatment. Joint mobilization, range of motion, aquatics, amputees, prosthetics, and orthotics are introduced. Students will identify architectural barriers and make modifications to overcome the limitations they impose. Gait-training techniques with assistive devices will be performed. Practical application of these
techniques will be practiced in the laboratory. F PTA 2013 PAIN MANAGEMENT II
Students will learn the principles and applications of various therapeutic modalities; electrotherapy, iontophoresis diathermy, biofeedback, laser, fluid therapy, infrared, taping, ultrasound, and light therapy. Practical application of these techniques will be practiced in the laboratory. S PTA 2024 THERAPEUTIC EXERCISE II Therapeutic exercises related to children are presented. Developmental sequences and primitive reflexes are introduced. Students will be instructed in cardiopulmonary treatments including cardiac rehabilitation and chest physical-therapy techniques. Practical application of these techniques will be practiced in the laboratory. S . PTA 2032 CLINICAL PRACTICUM I Clinical experience in local health care facilities to observe and practice PTA skills learned in class and lab sessions. Students will be under the supervision of a registered physical therapist and/or registered physical therapist assistant. F PTA 2112 PTA SYSTEMS/PROBLEMS The student will assist the physical therapist in selected evaluation treatment and administrative activities, summarize the progression of comprehensive rehabilitation programs for major disabilities, describe and utilize selected administrative records and charge systems in physical therapy, discuss measures for quality assurance and cost containment, review proper ways to write a resume, and review for national board examinations. S PTA 2133 CLINICAL PRACTICUM II Students are given the opportunity to practice PTA skills which have been acquired through the PTA Program in Physical Therapy Departments.
