LIGHTING DESIGN
SIMON SHENTON, HEAD OF LED AT LUCECO GROUP, LOOKS AT HOW SPENDING MORE UPFRONT CAN SAVE MONEY IN THE LONG-TERM… How to design a cost-effective lighting installation
W ith the cost of energy having reached its highest ever level, surging price hikes are having a major impact on budgets and running costs. While this is frustrating, some considerations can be made at the lighting design stage to keep costs to a minimum. The first one is lux levels or light intensity. If lux levels are too high or too bright, not only they can be unpleasant, but also use more energy than is necessary. The next consideration is lumen output, or effectively how much light is emitted into a space by the luminaire. By
using a higher lumen level, such as 3500 lumens, it is possible to use fewer LED panels, also lowering the cost of energy consumption. Another aspect is the correct light distribution. By choosing a wider beam angle, fewer luminaires could potentially be used, which then in turn uses less energy – delivering cost savings. Investing in quality

are no longer a “nice to have”. However, they can save an additional 30 - 40% of energy, on top of the savings outlined earlier. Due to luminaires being off or dimmed for longer, lighting controls enable the life of luminaires to be extended - offering further cost savings. Luceco Lighting offer a range of commercial lighting controls that can be specified as part of a lighting project. When all these factors are taken into account, there are huge amounts of energy that can be saved. While it can be difficult to convince end-users to spend more at the outset, if the energy savings can be identified, it becomes a much better project for both the contractor and those who are
products also helps save in the long term. The performance of raw LED chips is continuously growing, with a RAW lumens rate of 160 Lm/W. Once this is surrounded by a metal casing and covered with a diffuser, the amount of light can be significantly reduced in lower-cost products. Choosing a premium solution, such as those designed and manufactured by Luceco Lighting, the amount of light will be achieved with the use of fewer luminaires, lowering the cost of the design. Another important consideration for commercial buildings is the use of lighting controls. Now mandated under Part L of the building regulations, these
