NOVEMBER 2025

Sometimes, there aren’t enough overhead bins on small planes, so they make everyone do a gate check for larger bags. But if you carry items like a lighter or a battery, they can’t gate check you because they can’t be stowed on the plane. Always bring a water bottle, but make sure it has a screw top because when the pressure changes, bottles tend to leak. One of my favorite travel hacks is about memories. When I take photos or others text me their pictures from a trip, my smartphone’s location is set to “on.” That means every picture in my phone is geotagged, and Apple allows you to see photos by location. You can zoom in or out, and it will show you all the different places you’ve been. So, we can see from Florida to Iceland how things have changed since we last went. All my preparation is in service of having a good trip. Sometimes, I get lost in details and forget that if something doesn’t work as planned, it doesn’t really matter. My wife is excellent at researching where we are going, booking the things we know we want to do, and keeping our itinerary flexible. Plot out the big things and leave space for spontaneity. It’s been a beautiful 40 years of travel, and my wife and I have prioritized it throughout our marriage. It’s one of the things that connected us from the beginning, and we introduced our girls to travel right away. It’s a big world out there, and though I have seen so many places during my lifetime, I’m not done yet. –Kyle Matthews 1 (248) 543-0340

Airports and Heartbeats LESSONS COLLECTED ACROSS A LIFETIME OF TRAVEL

The airport feels like home. Whether I’m heading on a work trip or a vacation with my family, my whole psyche changes the second I start traveling somewhere. It begins before I ever set foot in the airport. On travel days, I wake up with a feeling of excitement. I’ve been a traveler my whole life. Literally, I was less than 1 year old the first time I flew when my parents took me to Alaska. Over the years, I’ve only continued to cross more places off the map, and my love for exploring the world has only grown.

the past happened, and we are here, let’s move forward. When we were in Hawaii and toured the Polynesian Cultural Center, our guide always greeted us with “Aloha, family,” and my family has kept that. As someone who travels four-plus times a year, I’ve gotten good at it. If I travel alone, I aim to bring only a carry-on. I always try to sit close to the front of the plane so I don’t have to wait for my baggage and can grab a taxi as quickly as possible.

Another flying hack is to opt for as few connecting flights

Nov. 17–21 is Geography Awareness Week, and for me, it feels like a celebration of everything I’ve learned from traveling.

as possible. It’s often worth paying a little more for that.

I have a travel kit for work trips and vacations, so I’m always ready. I’ve caught flak from my family for having such a thing, but guess who everyone turns to when they need to charge a device

There’s something different everywhere you go, and I

often discover something small that makes me grateful for home.

I take little things back from wherever I go, and I’m not talking about souvenirs, though we always find something. When my family visited Monument Valley and the American Southwest, our guide taught us the word “Yá’át’ééh,” which means

or have a headache? Everything is travel- friendly, so I don’t have to worry about the TSA. I’ve got a mini flashlight, a multidevice adapter, travel scissors, a mini first-aid kit, a very effective tick remover, a little wrench, and some cool tools.

Give Your Linens a Holiday Glow Up THE SECRET TO A SHOW-STOPPING TABLE

There’s nothing like climbing into a comfortable bed after a long day, but if your bed feels flat or not quite right, it can make falling and staying asleep difficult. The good news is that a few small changes can make a big difference, and you don’t need to spend a fortune or redo your bedroom. You can get that soft, hotel-bed feel by focusing on comfort, one layer at a time. Your mattress is the best place to start. If it’s too firm or starting to sag, a mattress topper can help. Look for something with a bit of cushioning. Memory foam or down alternative toppers are easy to find and can instantly improve how your bed feels. Once that’s in place, focus on your sheets. Breathable cotton or linen sheets that feel good against your skin can completely change how you sleep. And after a few washes, they soften even more. From there, build up the layers. A light quilt or comforter works well for everyday use, but adding a heavier blanket gives the bed a more grounded, cozy feel. Fold it across the foot of the bed or keep it within reach if you get cold at night. Of course, pillows are another key piece. Use two for sleeping and add one or two for lounging. Choose fills that match how you sleep, whether you prefer firm support or something softer. Texture also matters more than people think. A knit throw or velvet pillow can warm up the look and feel of the whole space, as can soft lighting and a bedside table. When your bed looks and feels comfortable, you’re more likely to use it to rest, not just crash. And once you have it right, it’s hard to settle for anything less. But if they are in good condition, and you really want to wow your guests, make them fine dining restaurant quality by properly removing creases and wrinkles. PRIDE IN EVERY PRESS Service members are expected to keep their uniforms clean and neat as a show of discipline and pride. Beyond the symbolic act, soldiers come to rely on these garments in many situations, and they need to last. These uniforms are exposed to more dirt, sweat, oils, and other contaminants than the average garment. Preserving vintage military uniforms in your family is a way to display their heroism and history for future generations. Many of these uniforms, especially those 50 years old or older, don’t come with care or fabric labels. At Janet Davis Cleaners, we know these uniforms aren’t just a garment but a legacy. With every restoration, we strive to honor the stories they carry for many years to come. BUNGALOWS AND BLISS Tropical Escapes to Savor

Whether you’re looking to book a tropical trip this winter or want to live vicariously through descriptions of dream destinations, this article is for you!

Of course, an extraordinary vacation doesn’t necessarily mean spending time in an expansive environment. Those looking to balance luxury with a low-key vibe should check out Gili Lankanfushi Maldives , a boutique resort that invites guests to lounge on a private water hammock as their worries wash away. FRESH PERKS IN FRENCH POLYNESIA Outdoor bungalows are also a big hit in Bora Bora. In addition to in-room pools, the Four Seasons Bora Bora resort offers guests a view of Mount Otemanu that all intrepid travelers should experience at least once. Over at the Westin Bora Bora , vacationers can take in the locale’s modern aesthetics while sipping cocktails at its swim-up bar. If you plan to travel with a large group, the two-story Presidential Suites and overwater villas at the Conrad Bora Bora Nui are outstanding options. Not surprisingly, Bora Bora isn’t the only place to visit in French Polynesia. Although the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort and Spa tends to book up quickly due to its smaller size, it’s worth trying to get a room for this vacation spot’s famous snorkeling sites alone.

From overwater bungalows to swim-up bars, these resorts redefine relaxation in some of the world’s most glamorous getaways.

A SPECTACULAR SOUTH ASIAN SOJOURN If you want to add flavor to your wintertime festivities with an international jaunt, the Maldives, just southwest of India, is home to some of the world’s most renowned resorts. Celebrated for its spacious rooms, private pools, and “floating breakfasts,” The Ritz- Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands , boasts seven restaurants offering a vast array of global delicacies. Another Maldives mainstay, Soneva Fushi , offers some of the largest overwater villas in the world, perfect for viewing the area’s breathtakingly clear waters. And if you’re a fan of exploring tropical travel via social media, you’ve likely caught an eyeful of Instagram favorite Soneva Jani . This Maldives destination provides guests plenty of playful options, ranging from a waterslide to a trip on one of the resort’s seaplanes.
