Giving notice You need to give ‘notice of your intent to marry or form a Civil Partnership’. You do this in person in the district where you live. If either of you are a non-EEA (European Economic Area) national or subject to immigration
To give notice you must prove where you live, your nationality, age and marital status. You also declare that you’re both free to marry or to form a Civil Partnership with each other. Notices are valid for 12 months from the date they’re given. You can’t give notice more than a year before your ceremony date and the minimum amount of notice is 28 days. On the day you give notice, go with your partner to the Register Office. The questions will be about you and your partner. They will check your paperwork and help with any issues or questions. They’ll also ask where and when you plan to get married and check that you have secured a booking.

In some instances, this may change, so please speak to the Registrar about any special circumstances. If there are no objections after the 28 days, the Register Office responsible for organising your ceremony will issue ‘Certificates for Marriage’ or ‘Civil Partnership Schedules’.
