Legal formalities You must each attend an appointment in person at the register office to give notice of your intent to marry or form a civil partnership. If you reside in the county of Surrey, you can attend any of the Surrey register offices to give notice. If you reside outside of the county of Surrey, you will be required to give notice at the register office in the council tax area in which you live. Giving notice means declaring that you are both free to marry each other or enter into a civil partnership. You will need to provide original documents at your notice appointment, and you are able to give notice up to one year before the date of your ceremony but no later than 29 days before.
You will need to make an appointment at the register office in the council tax area in which you live. If you live in the county of Surrey, you can book your appointment online at www.surreycc.gov.uk/ceremonies When you give notice, the registrar will ask questions about you and your partner to ensure that you are legally able to marry or form a civil partnership. You will be asked to pay the notice fee by card or online at the end of your appointment. If you are not a British citizen, different legislation will apply, so please check our website for further information before you book the appointment. Further details of how to give notice of marriage or civil partnership can be found on our website – www.surreycc.gov.uk/ceremonies.
