Sam uel J. Mills, w ho w as active last w in te r a n d sp rin g in d istrib u tin g fam ine relief in th e flooded d istricts of C hina, estim ates th a t th e funds sen t from A m e r­ ica fo r th e relief of distress in this region w e r e . effectual in saving th e lives of 13,000 p eo p le w ho w ould p ro b ab ly have died e x cep t fo r A m erican aid. W h en th e old P u rita n p re a c h e r John E liot w as o n his d eath -b ed a frien d called to see him , a n d found a little Indian child b y his bedside b ein g ta u g h t b y th e dying m an to read . T h e frien d p ro teste d th a t in such a n h o u r th e sick m an m ight be relieved from th e b u rd e n of such a task, b u t his a n sw er w as: “ God has left m e ju st stre n g th en o u g h to tea ch th is child his letters.** D r. C h apm an a n d his associates, w ho, as th e C o n tin en t stated a few w eeks ago, a re p ro lo n g in g th e ir w o rk in A u stra lia th ro u g h th e p re se n t sum m er th ere, will a rriv e in th e U n ited S tates n e x t July, a n d ex pect to ta k e p a r t in a n um b er of Bible conferences in v a rio u s sections of the c o u n try d u rin g Ju ly a n d A u g u st.
