SCROTAL CIRCUMFERENCE MEASUREMENTS & FERTILITY All bulls will have a breeding soundness evaluation and semen test before delivery. Scrotal measurements are taken at 10½ to 11 months of age and adjusted to 365 days of age. Scrotal measurements will be available sale day.

This is the 26 th year we have used ultrasound technology to evaluate carcass characteristics. Weather permitting, we will have carcass ultrasound information available on all bulls just prior to the sale that can be accessed on our web site. This information will be available for our customers upon request and more importantly it will be used for more meaningful genetic evaluations in the future as it contributes to carcass EPDs. CARCASS ULTRASOUND

RETAINED INTEREST One-half semen interest is retained and full possession selling on all bulls. This means purchaser buys the bull for what he bids and gets 100% possession and 100% resale value of the bull when he sells him. It does give Leland Red Angus and Koester Red Angus the option to collect, use and market semen from the bull and does not restrict purchaser from doing the same. This collection, unless agreed otherwise, would be done at the expense of Leland Red Angus or Koester Red Angus and at the purchaser’s convenience. Leland Red Angus or Koester Red Angus would assume full liability for the bull’s welfare at the purchase value during transportation and collection unless it is a joint venture with the purchaser. In such a case, liability would be proportionately assumed. KOESTER BULL DEVELOPMENT The fall-born bulls are weaned in March and put on a high- roughage ration until we have green grass – hopefully in late May. The bulls summer on grass and limited supplement to encourage slow but steady growth for optimum longevity and fertility. In September, we bring the bulls into the lot and start them on a ration consisting of chopped hay, silage and cracked corn. The bulls stay on this ration until sale time. We strive to promote steady growth, sound foot development and healthy, active potency so they are prolific breeders and maintain their body condition throughout breeding season.

BULL & HEIFER DEVELOPMENT

LELAND BULL DEVELOPMENT Our bulls are developed at our ranch facilities on a total mixed ration formulated for adequate growth, but mild enough to protect their fertility and longevity. Bulls are started on a roughage only diet and gradually transitioned to a TMR for development.

LELAND HEIFER DEVELOPMENT The heifers are wintered on a high roughage ration that targets an ADG of 1.5 lbs. per day, which is optimal for breeding performance.

ProS ..... Profitability and Sustainability is an all-purpose index that predicts average economic differences in all segments in the beef supply chain. This index is a combination of the breeding objectives modeled in the HerdBuilder and GridMaster selection indexes. In this index, replacement heifers are retained from within the herd and all remaining progeny are fed out to slaughter and sold on a quality-based grid. Traits included in this index include calving ease, growth, HPG, STAY, Mature Weight, Dry Matter Intake and carcass traits. The resulting index is expressed in dollars per head born (Index/High Value). HB ....... HerdBuilder is a maternal selection index that predicts the economic differences of animals for traits that are important from conception through weaning. Expressed as dollars per head born, HB is calculated based on the scenario that bulls are mated to heifers and cows, replacement heifers are retained and all remaining progeny are marketed at weaning. Traits included in the HB index include Calving Ease Direct, Calving Ease Maternal, Weaning Weight, Milk, Mature Weight, Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability (Index/High Value). GM....... GridMaster is a selection index that predicts the average economic difference of non-replacement calves through the post-weaning phase of production. GM places selection pressure on growth, feedyard performance and carcass traits. Expressed as dollars per head born, GM is calculated based on the scenario that progeny are fed out to slaughter and marketed on a quality-based carcass grid. Traits included in GM include Average Daily Gain, Carcass Weight, Dry Matter Intake, Marbling, Back Fat and Rib Eye Area (Index/High Value). CED ........ Calving Ease Direct predicts differences in the percent of calves born unassisted out of 2-year-old dams. (Percent/High Value) BW ........ Birth Weight predicts differences in actual birth weight of progeny. (Pounds/Low Value) WW ....... Weaning Weight predicts differences in 205-day weaning weight. (Pounds/High Value) RED ANGUS GUIDE TO EPDS RedAngus.org

YW ........ Yearling Weight predicts differences in 365-day yearling weight. (Pounds/High Value) ADG ....... Average Daily Gain predicts differences in weight gain between 205 and 365 days of age. (Pounds/High Value) DMI ....... Dry Matter Intake predicts differences in daily feed intake as measured in a feedlot during the post-weaning period. (Pounds/Low Value) MILK ..... Milk predicts differences in weaning weight attributed to the milking ability of the animal’s daughters. (Pounds/High Value) ME ........ Maintenance Energy predicts the difference in maintence energy requirements. (Mcal per Month/Low Value) HPG ....... Heifer Pregnancy predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to conceive and calve at 2 years of age following exposure to breeding. (Percent/High Value) CEM ...... Calving Ease Maternal predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to calve unassisted as 2-year-old heifers. (Percent/High Value) STAY ...... Stayability predicts differences in the ability of an animals’ retained daughters to remain productive in the herd – calve every year – through 6 years of age. (Percent/High Value) MARB .... information available to make their purchasing decisions. With the GGP-uLD profile, the bulls’ EPDs now have the same accuracy as they would with their first calf crop reported and registered through the Red Angus Association of America. The GGP-uLD test also verifies parentage so you are assured of the bloodlines you are buying. We trust in the science behind the genomics and are committed to ensure more value in your purchases, increasing the profitability of your calf crop.

UDDER SCORES

Udder scores have been used to cull and select cattle at Leland Red Angus and Koester Red Angus for many years. Scores are taken within 12 hours of calving by the same person to insure consistency. Scores less than 5 are considered unacceptable, and those individuals are not kept in our herds. We include the dam’s udder scores for Suspension and Teat Size following her MPPA in each bull’s data block.

FOOT SCORES

Our cow herds are all individually scored for foot quality. Any cow that fails to meet a desired score is disposed of with one exception: Occasionally, a good producer who falls out on foot or udder quality can be utilized as a recip cow for ET.
