Studies in Critical Thinking & Writing 3 A continuation of 100 or 110A, this course uses literary works as content for reading and discussion of ideas and methods in writing, stressing critical thinking, persuasion and evaluation; experience in writing essays and the research paper. Prerequisite: 100 or 110A. Notes: Required. 3 Intensive practice in writing at the college level. Designed for the students who have not satisfactorily fulfilled their department’s WCR (Writing Competency Requirement) as described in the General Studies section. Concentration Requirements For those committed to rigorous professional training in preparation for graduate study in English, application can be made for admission to this concentration, which requires 42 units. Having first registered as generalists or declared one of the other tracks, candidates may apply to the concentration after three semesters of undergraduate study, having attained at least a 3.8 GPA in their major or having obtained departmental consent. Students then take six specialized upper–division courses (ENGL 340, two sections of 454, 471, 490, and 491) in addition to the English core.

Reading and discussion of ideas and methods in writing, stressing fundamentals of grammar, punctuation, spelling and paragraph writing, along with critical thinking persuasion and evaluation. International students scoring below 480 on the verbal section of the SAT II (and under 510 on the SAT II Writing Exam, if applicable) and undergraduate students finishing ENGL 109 in ELSP must take ENGL 100 within the first term of residence. Lecture/Lab Hours: Three hours of lecture, two hours of lab. Prerequisite to 110B. Studies in Critical Thinking & Writing 3 Reading and discussion of ideas and methods in writing, stressing critical thinking, persuasion and evaluation; experience in writing a variety of expository and persuasive essays.
