Advanced Studies in Conducting 2 One or more sections offered periodically in the areas of choral and instrumental conducting. Continuation of the objectives of MUSC 323 related specifically to the technical and interpretative skills of either choral or instrumental conducting. Prerequisite: 323. 2 An introduction to teaching general music in both elementary and secondary school situations in accordance with national and state standards for music education. General Music Methods Contemporary Music Issues 1-3 One or more courses offered periodically in such areas as: arranging, songwriting, performance practice, electronic technology. An analysis and activity course that examines contemporary music as it relates to composing, arranging and performing in pop and jazz styles. Issues addressed will include pop and theatre songwriting, vocal and small instrumental ensemble arranging and the performance of contemporary styles as they relate to their use in school and church settings. Prerequisite: 114 A, 114 W or department permission. Notes: May be repeated with different content. 2 Pre-professional course designed for music majors who plan to qualify for the state K-12 single subject teaching credential in music. Students learn and practice skills important for teaching elementary music lessons. The creation of worship charts, lead sheets, chord substitutions, simplified hymn harmonizations, modulations, segues, intros, outros, and turnarounds. Emphasis on writing arrangements and projects which incorporate the above features. 1 This course is designed to teach church service playing skills at an advanced level to pianists and organists. Areas of work include: harmonization, transposition, modulation, improvisation, hymn playing, accompanying (solo and choral) and repertoire. Keyboard Orchestration 2 Sequencing. Application of presets and samples to worship songs. Creating and performing complementary parts (string, synth, percussion, and B3 sounds) for sound tracks. 2 Study and performance of piano accompaniment for vocal and instrumental literature; discussion of styles and performance practices; experience in public performance. Notes: May be repeated one time for credit. Piano Accompanying Advanced Music Technology and Film Scoring 2 Advanced studies in sequencing and sound editing and how these tools directly compliment the film-scoring process. Students will be required to write music for actual films/ film clips. Prerequisite: 347 but may be waived with area coordinator signature. 0 Preparation for Junior level applied major 30-minute recital. Notes: Graded on a credit / no credit basis. Fee: $40. Junior Recital Performance Seminar 1 Group performance, discussion of performance practice and performance evaluation. Possible sections of voice, piano, organ and various wind and orchestral instruments. Notes: May be repeated for up to 3 units in the same area of performance.

Analysis of 20th Century Music 2 Focuses on developing tools for practical analysis of 20th Century music. Class time will be spent discussing and exercising some of the many styles and techniques developed in that period, along with approaches for interpreting and reproducing.

Church Music Principles: Philosophy & Practice 3 Music of the Bible. Music in ethnic and multicultural churches.

Church Music Leadership: Administration 3 Planning and organizing worship services and other church events involving music. Conducting music ensembles and congregational singing.
