Torrey Europe Torrey Europe is a tour and course in Europe, offered in the summer. It provides students with four credits in the Torrey program. Students read books prior to the tour and are led by Torrey tutors in integrating that reading, and their other Torrey readings, with the cultural and religious heritage of Europe. Students will gain historical, archaeological, and cultural insights into the origin and development of Western civilization and Christianity. The itinerary may alter from year to year.

Torrey Rome Torrey Rome is composed of approximately twenty-two students and one or two Torrey tutors who travel and live together in Rome during Interterm where they have sessions on assigned reading and view and discuss Rome’s great art and architecture. Though the theme of the reading requirements differ each year, Rome’s history, both Christian and pagan, is always a focus of the trip. Participants visit the famed Borghese Museum, the four major Roman basilicas, the catacombs, the Colosseum and Roman Forum and the Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel.

Students may receive credit for the following courses via registration for YMDT 490, 491 or 492 with permission of faculty mentor and program director: YMDT 304 * , 310, 325, 401, 402 * , 410, 465. Students may combine YMDT 490, 491, or 492 to replace a maximum of 16 upper-division credits throughout their undergraduate career, while taking no more than 12 credits of the same course number. Any requested substitution beyond this is subject to written approval from the director. * Johnson House students may substitute 8 credits of YMDT 490, 491 or 492 in place of YMDT 304 or 401 or 16 credits of 490, 491 or 492 in place of YMDT 304 and 401. Torrey Off-Campus Programs Torrey offers opportunities to live and study away from the Biola campus for credit. Torrey Berkeley is a course in Berkeley, California. Students read books, attend lectures, participate in discussion groups, visit cultural points of interest, and are involved in practical ministry. Torrey Europe is a course in selected parts of Europe. It provides students with 4 credits. Students read books prior to the trip and are led by Torrey tutors in integrating that reading, and their other Torrey readings, with the cultural and religious heritage of Europe. Torrey Rome is a course in Rome, Italy. Students read assigned books, participate in discussion groups, visit museums, churches and other cultural/historical points of interest. Torrey Abroad is a course offered in selected overseas locations in which students teach in public schools and work with local Christian organizations. The credits from these programs may be applied to Morgan House 310, 325, 410 and/or 465 or Johnson House 304, 401 and/or 402. With approval, 492 may be substituted in place of the Torrey Honors Thesis, YMDT 480. Torrey Berkeley Torrey Berkeley consists of an intensive tutorial experience, usually in the summer. YMDT 101 - On Origins Introduces students to western epics such as Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey and Virgil’s Aeneid, along with works from Ovid, Dante, Spenser and Milton. Lays a foundation for biblical theology and includes the works of the Pentateuch and Hebrews. When Offered: Fall, freshman year. Fee: $80. Credit(s): 8. YMDT 102 - On Desire Examines the classical topic of eros through selected texts such as works by Plato, Shakespeare, Donne, as well as Augustine’s Confessions, Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, biblical wisdom literature and the gospel of Mark.
